Hensley strikes out seven in a complete game shutout, Butler connects on a two-run triple
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Megan Hensley struck out seven in a complete game shutout and freshman Charley Butler scored twice and drove in a pair of runs to help the University of Louisville softball team beat Bradley 6-0 Monday afternoon in the Tennessee Classic.
Â
Louisville (7-5) will take on No. 7/8 Tennessee in the final game of the tournament Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Â
The teams played through four scoreless innings before the Cardinals broke through with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Kyra Snyder was hit by a pitch and lifted for pinch-runner Jordyn Wolfe, who moved to second when freshman Charley Butler reached on an error. Wolfe proceeded to steal third and an error on the attempt to catch her stealing sent Wolfe home to put Louisville on the scoreboard. Butler then stole third and also crossed the plate on an error to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Â
The sixth inning saw four more Louisville runs cross the plate. Hensley got the frame started with a leadoff single. Sophomore Maddy Newman entered to run for Hensley and took second on junior Caitlin Ferguson's sacrifice bunt. After freshman Rebecca Chung's fly out to right moved Newman to third, freshman Taylor Roby walked and stole second. An error on the attempt to get Roby out at second sent Newman home. Snyder walked to put runners on for Butler, who lifted a two-run triple to right field, extending Louisville's lead to 5-0. Butler would go on to score on a double steal after sophomore Riley Schindler walked and stole second.
Â
Hensley (1-1) picked up the win, scattering four hits and striking out seven in 7.0 innings. Junior Celene Funke finished the game with two doubles.
Â
