Late Inning Rally Falls Short in 5-3 Loss at No. 7/8 Tennessee

Roby's three-run homer helps the Cards put together a late-inning rally
The University of Louisville softball team put together a late-inning rally with a three-run homer by freshman Taylor Roby and had the go-ahead run at the plate, but fell 5-3 to host No. 7/8 Tennessee in the final game of the Tennessee Classic Monday evening.
Â
Roby finished the game with two hits and a career-high three RBIs and senior Megan Hensley had a pair of hits to help pace the Cardinals as they outhit the Lady Vols 8-6. Four of Louisville's eight hits fell in for extra bases.
Â
The teams played through two scoreless innings before Tennessee (13-2) put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back hits by Jenna Holcomb and Aubrey Leach set up Amanda Ayala's two-run double. Ashley Morgan's RBI groundout would eventually bring Ayala home to give Tennessee a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Lady Vols extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth when pair of two-out hits by Ayala and Chelsea Seggem and a walk to Ashely Morgan loaded the bases for Ally Shipman's two-run single.
Â
The Cardinals countered in the sixth with Roby's three-run homer. Hensley led off the frame with a hit and freshman Rebecca Chung walked to put two on with one out. After a Tennessee pitching change, Roby stepped up to the plate and launched the first pitch she saw over the wall in centerfield. Her first career home run brought the score to 5-3. Sophomore Kyra Snyder reached on an error and freshman Charley Butler walked to put the tying run on, but Louisville could not capitalize.
Â
Louisville had a final chance to push runs across in the seventh when junior Celene Funke delivered a leadoff single and moved to third on junior Caitlin Ferguson's double. Roby was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs, but a groundout ended the game.
Â
TEAM NOTES:
• Funke has reached safely via a hit or walk in 12 straight games and she is currently on a five-game hitting streak.
• With a stolen base in today's game, Sidney Melton now has 36 in her career and stands in ninth place on Louisville's all-time list. She needs one more to tie Jordan McNary (2014-17) for eighth place.
• Chung leads the team with a .400 batting average, a .750 slugging percentage and a .552 on-base percentage. Roby stands second on the team with a .391 average, a .565 slugging percentage and a .481 on-base percentage.
• Up next, Louisville will host Indiana State, IUPUI and Missouri in its home-opening Cardinal Classic March 1-3 at Ulmer Stadium.
