Louisville Baseball Finishes Sweep of Brown
February 24, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals took the finale 13-2 for their fourth straight victory.
The two teams completed the first eight innings on Saturday, before inclement weather put a halt to the action. The game resumed on Sunday, with Austin Dickey retiring Brown (0-3) in order in the ninth to finish off the win.
Senior Bryan Hoeing (1-1) earned his first win of the season, pitching five innings, matching his career high with seven strikeouts and giving up one run.
Louisville (5-2) secured its first home-weekend series win thanks to offense by committee. The junior trio of Tyler Fitzgerald (three), Logan Wyatt (two) and Danny Oriente (two) combined for seven RBIs in the finale.
The Cardinals scored in bunches to down the Bears, including seven runs in the eighth inning.
Brown crossed the plate first, scoring in the top of the third inning. A pair of singles in the bottom half set up junior Jake Snider to plate senior Zeke Pinkham from third base. Fitzgerald cranked a home run in the next at bat, giving Louisville a 3-1 lead.
A fielder's choice kept one on and one out for the Bears in the top of the fourth. A single put two runners on and a wild pitch advanced the pair. Hoeing walked the next batter to load the bases, but the senior snagged a liner to him to get out of the jam.
Brown added a second run in the top of the sixth, but the Cardinals answered right back.
Snider's triple kicked off the bottom half of the sixth and was brought home on Oriente's double to immediately stretch the margin back out to two. Wyatt later scored on a sacrifice fly and an error at first base allowed Oriente to score from third for the final run of the inning.
The final three innings were a race against the weather as thunder storms loomed. Rain caused control issues for the pitchers, leading to four walks in the bottom of the eighth inning to fuel Louisville's seven-run inning. Trey Leonard registered his first career hit and RBI in the frame with a run-scoring single back through the middle.
Zeke Pinkham tallied a career-best three hits at the plate to help lead the Louisville offense. Oriente also turned in a three-hit day as part of the Cardinals' season-best 13-hit effort.
The Cards return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 26 against Xavier. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
