Louisville tied Leones de Escogido and defeated an academy team from Go Ministries.
JUAN DOLIO, Dominican Republic – The University of Louisville baseball team picked up a win and a tie on Sunday in a pair of split squad games at the Kansas City Royals Academy in Guerra.
The Cardinals played to a 4-4 tie against 16-time Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) champion Leones de Escogido, while securing an 8-4 victory over an academy team from Go Ministries.
Bobby Miller took the ball for the Cardinals against Escogido, retiring the first six batters he faced. The righthander ran into trouble in the third however, giving up three consecutive singles and a homer to give the Leones a 4-0 advantage.
Louisville got two of the runs back immediately, as Lucas Dunn tripled home Luke Brown and Alex Binelas rolled a ball to second to bring in the second run.
The contest held at 4-2 through the seventh, with Gavin Sullivan and Glenn Albanese combining to keep the Leones off the board over the next four innings. Zach Britton and Henry Davis started the eighth with back-to-back singles and the pair moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Trey Leonard cut the deficit in half with a RBI groundout and Davis touched the plate with the tying run on a second wild pitch.
Adam Elliott coaxed a double play to end the bottom half of the inning and stranded a pair in the ninth to close out the game at four apiece.
In the other half of the split squad games, the Cardinals used a five-run eighth inning to surge in front for the victory.
Louisville put a run up in the second on a Tim Borden II double and another in the third on a groundout off the bat of Ben Bianco. The Go Ministries squad leveled the contest with two in the fourth however, before Dalton Rushing put the Cardinals back in front with a double off the wall that scored Nick Dean.
UofL was on the wrong side of the scoreboard for the first time after a two-run homer in the sixth, but the offense took care of business in the eighth. Cameron Masterman and Blayne Robinson each had run-scoring singles to seesaw the Cardinals into the lead and Borden finished things with one swing, launching a three-run homer over the wall in left.
Tate Kuehner tossed three scoreless innings on the mound for the Cardinals. Blayne Robinson allowed two unearned runs in two innings of work and Garrett Schmeltz struck out eighth over three innings.
The Cardinals will wrap up play in the Dominican against Toros del Este (LIDOM) at Estadio Francisco Micheli in La Romana on Monday.
CARDINALS PROVIDE FOOD FOR LOCAL VILLAGE
Following Sunday's contests, the Cardinals split up and traveled to two nearby villages to visit with the local people. The players and staff spent time with the children and provided food. The orphanage visit was a continuation of the community service portion of the trip in partnership with Score International.
