Albiero has led the Cardinals to unprecedented heights
The University of Louisville Athletic Association Board of Directors approved new contract terms for head swimming coach Arthur Albiero last week.
Â
The new contract is a seven-year rolling agreement effective as of July 1, 2019, includes a $50,000 increase in his base salary along with incentive clauses with bonuses tied to top 5/10/25 finishes at the NCAA Championships, ACC Championships and Coach of the Year honors, APR excellence among other possible accomplishments.
Â
"Arthur has built an incredible program, taking the program from not-so-great to having consistent success, including coaching the women to a fourth place finish in the NCAA and the men to a fifth place for another great team finish last year. It was another way to look at his contract so that he hopefully will end his career here at Louisville. We extended it and time-framed it. He and I talked about if a year ago, about how to get it done. This contract lets him know we want for him for the rest of his career."
Â
Albiero is coming off a banner year for the aquatic Cardinals. History was made last season for the Cardinals as they became the first ACC program in history to have both its men's and women's teams finish among the top-five in the team standings at the NCAA Championships in the same year.
Â
The men's team finished a program-high fifth place at NCAAs, surpassing their previous top finish of ninth in both 2012 and 2018. Their 212 points was also the most scored by a Louisville team at an NCAA Championships. The Cardinal men were the team runners-up at the ACC Championships.
Â
Highlighted by a pair of national titles for Mallory Comerford, the women's team recorded their highest finish in program history with a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Championships. Like the men, their score of 235 points was also the most points scored by a Cardinal team at NCAAs in history. Louisville secured third place at the ACC Championships.
Â
"Over the last 17 years, I have had the privilege of being associated with some of the very best athletes, coaches, support staff and athletic administration in the entire country at the University of Louisville. I am honored for the vote of confidence to continue to have the privilege to lead Louisville Swimming & Diving as we cement a tradition of excellence as one of the elite programs in the country at one of the finest universities in the NCAA," said Albiero. "I want to thank our athletic administration for all of their support over the last 17 years. Special thanks to VP/AD Vince Tyra, SWA Christine Herring and Deputy AD Josh Heird for their continued belief in the vision for Louisville Swimming & Diving. This is a passion, not a job. This program has had many 'Shock the World' moments over the last decade and I look forward to the bright and exciting future that lies ahead."
