October 18, 2019 | Women's Golf
The Cardinals are tied for fourth place through 18 holes
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's golfer Mairead Martin shot an opening-round 4-under-par 68 to hold a two-shot lead after the first round of the 16th annual Cardinal Cup Friday (Oct. 18).
Hosted by the Cardinals at the University of Louisville Golf Club, the par-72 course is being played at 6,261 yards. Campbell holds a three-shot lead with a team score of 292.
UofL sits in a tie for fourth place with Mercer shooting a 297, one shot back of Kentucky and two back of Washington.
Martin tied a career-low with her first-round 68, which included a 3-under-par 33 on the front nine. She finished her round with seven birdies, four on the front nine and three on the back nine. She was one of only three players in the field to record a birdie on No. 16, a 193-yard par-3.
"I was striking my irons really well," Martin said. "I was hitting it close and then holeing a lot of putts. Tomorrow I'm just going try and do what I did today; just be steady. Just go out and have fun and enjoy it."
Hana Ryskova is tied for third after shooting a 1-under-par 71. She carded five birdies, three of which came on the back nine on Nos. 14, 16 and 17, to finish at 3-under-par.
Lauren Hartlage is tied for 40th place with a 77 on the day. Delaney Shah is tied for 80th place with an 81, carding two birdies for the round. One shot back in a tie for 87th is Meghan Nay to round out the team scoring.
Agustina Gomez Cisterna led the UofL individuals in a tie for 25th place with a 3-over-par 75, which included three birdies. Linda Trockel and Lauren Thibodeau are tied for 40th place with rounds of 77. Trockel finished with three birdies, while Thibodeau had a pair. Margot Bechadergue is tied for 52nd place after shooting a 78 for the round.
The second round of the Cardinal Cup begins tomorrow, October 19, at 9:00 a.m. off the No. 1 and 10 tees at the UofL Golf Club.
