Schmitt is a three-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team; Gelnovatch earns his first honor
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior forward Tate Schmitt and redshirt sophomore Jake Gelnovatch were named Thursday to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team.
A three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, Schmitt completed his degree in marketing in December before signing a Major League Soccer homegrown contract with Real Salt Lake earlier this month. Schmitt was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Second Team, United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First Team, All-ACC First Team and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team while scoring five goals and adding eight assists in 19 matches during his final collegiate season in 2018. He was selected as the ACC Championship Tournament MVP after leading Cardinals to their first ACC title. A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Schmitt ranks fourth in school history in career points with 69 and sixth in career goals with 26. He totaled 11 game-winning goals in four seasons with the Cardinals, including four in the NCAA Championship.
Majoring in sport administration, Gelnovatch registered six shutouts in 15 starts and finished with a 0.94 goals against average in 2018. Gelnovatch was named to the 2018 ACC Championship All-Tournament Team after surrendering just one goal in three wins to clinch Louisville's first ACC title. He registered shutouts against No. 2 Duke, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Clemson, No. 18 Notre Dame and No. 4 North Carolina last season.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the team.
Louisville ended its season with an 11-5-3 record overall and ranked 16th in the final United Soccer Coaches poll following a second round loss to Michigan State in the 2018 NCAA Championship. The 2018 season was a successful one for the Cardinals, who earned the program's first ACC Championship title with victories over Notre Dame, Wake Forest and North Carolina in a span of eight days.
