Rivers' Hat Trick Leads Cardinals to Win Over Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Michigan 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at U-M Soccer Stadium. Junior Brooklynn Rivers led the Cardinals with her first career hat trick. The Cardinals improve to 4-0-0 on the year while Michigan drops to 3-1-0.  Â
"I am very proud of our total team effort today," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "This was a great team win."
The Cardinals struck first in the sixth minute when Rivers took the ball off the foot of a Michigan defender and placed it into the bottom-right corner of the net past the Michigan keeper. Â Â The Wolverines quickly responded with a goal 15 seconds later from Nicki Hernandez.
Louisville found the net again in the 21st minute off a penalty kick. Rivers stepped up to take the kick and drilled it into the bottom-left corner of the net for a 2-1 advantage for the Cardinals.Â
The Cardinals held the 2-1 lead into the break. Louisville finished with a 6-2 shot advantage and a 3-1 corner kick advantage in the first half.Â
Rivers wasted no time in the second half, scoring her third goal in the 48th minute. She took a cross from Arianna Ferraro about 12-yards out and blasted the shot in, giving Louisville a 3-1 advantage.Â
The Louisville defense held Michigan to just one shot in the second half. Louisville keeper Gabby Kouzelos finished with one save in the second half. The Cardinals finished the match with a 9-3 shot advantage and a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Michigan keeper Izzy Nino finished with one save while the team recorded a save.Â
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 31 as they host Kentucky at 5:30 p.m. in Lynn Stadium.Â
