Rivers' Overtime Goal Leads Louisville Over Kentucky

Cardinals defeat the Wildcats 1-0 in overtime on Friday Night
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated in-state rival Kentucky 1-0 in overtime on Friday night in Lynn Stadium.  After a three-hour weather delay, both teams were held scoreless in regulation.  Two minutes into the overtime period, junior Brooklynn Rivers scored the game-winner from 18-yards out for the Cardinal win.

"Kentucky was outstanding," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "This was a difficult team to beat. They were really tough to break down defensively. It took a special effort like Brooklyn's goal at the end to really do it. I'm very happy with the result and I think the performance was outstanding. These rivalry games are usually emotionally charged, it wasn't attractive soccer but we're super pleased with how good the game was, for both teams."

Louisville improves to 5-0-0 on the season. The Kentucky Wildcats drop to 3-2-0.

Louisville's best chance of the first half came with 26 minutes remaining on a shot by Maisie Whitsett that was saved by the UK keeper. The Cardinals earned a corner kick following the shot and Whitsett took the corner inside the box and tried to slip it past the UK keeper but she fell on the ball for the save.

Both teams finished with three shots in the first half, while all three Louisville shots were on goal. Cardinal keeper Gabby Kouzelos finished with one save while UK keeper Hannah Leonard finished with three saves. Louisville held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

In the second half, the Cardinals had two good opportunities in the 59th minute. Emina Ekic had a shot saved then Arianna Ferraro had a shot saved seven seconds later. Kentucky's Marissa Bosco hit the crossbar in the 60th minute.

Louisville had more chances in the final five minutes of regulation. Mollie Rouse had a shot saved then a minute later Whitsett's header on a corner kick went high. The Wildcats gained control in the final minute but the Cardinal defense held tough and regained control with 30 seconds remaining. Nadege L'Esperance just missed the goal in the final seconds, forcing the overtime period.

Both teams traded possession to start the overtime period, then the Louisville midfield gained possession and Allison Whitfield found a streaking Rivers who blasted the shot from 18 yards out for the golden goal.

Louisville finished the match with a 14-5 shot advantage and a 6-2 corner kick advantage. Leonard finished with eight saves while Kouzelos finished with one.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 6 as they travel to Purdue.
