Women’s Golf Tied for Fourth After First Day of NCAA Regional
May 07, 2018 | Women's Golf
Olivia Cason and Lauren Hartlage are tied for 10th.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Olivia Cason and Lauren Hartlage helped the University of Louisville women's golf team produce one of its best rounds of the season, leading the Cardinals into a tie for fourth on the opening day of the NCAA San Francisco Regional.
The duo each shot a 1-under-par 71, as the Cardinals finished Monday with a 1-under-par 287 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, Calif. It is the second-best round at an NCAA Regional in program history and its fifth best of the year, putting the Cardinals even with host No. 5 Stanford and Oregon.
Cason and Hartlage nearly had an error-free day, combining for four birdies and only two bogeys, and are tied for 10th out of the 96-player field. They compiled the fifth-most pars in the field with 15.
“We are very pleased that we are off to a solid start and have put ourselves in a good position with two days to go,” head coach Courtney Trimble said. “We knew we were really prepared coming into the week, but we want to build upon this momentum and stay aggressive.”
The Owensboro, Ky., native, Cason continued her remarkable play from a week ago, when she qualified for the 73rd U.S. Women's Open Championship. It is Cason's third round even or below par in an NCAA Regional, achieving the first two in 2016, when she advanced as an individual to the NCAA Championships.
Hartlage, a fellow Kentucky native, broke the school's single-season record with her 18th round even or below par. Cindy LaCrosse held the No. 1 position since 2008-09.
Senior Molly Skapik, in the midst of the best season of her career, is tied for 25th. The Miamisburg, Ohio, native, who shot an even-par 72, accumulated three birdies, including one on a par-5, 535-yard hole. It is her 14th round even or below par, building upon a single-season best, and a mark that is tied for fourth on the school's single-season list.
Louisville also received solid play from Kristin Engle and Delaney Shah, both appearing in their first career NCAA event. Engle carded a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 33rd, while Shah's 2-over-par 75 is good enough to tie for 52nd.
Louisville returns for the second round of the regional on Tuesday, teeing off with Stanford and Oregon at noon ET.
The top six teams and three individuals (not on advancing teams) in each of the four regionals will advance and make up the 24-team field for the NCAA Championships, held from May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
