Wolf strikes out 10 in eight innings for his fifth win; Stowers and Campbell connect on home runs
BRIGHTON, Mass. - Adam Wolf had 10 strikeouts on the mound while Josh Stowers and Drew Campbell each homered as the No. 29 Louisville baseball team opened its weekend series at Boston College with a 6-1 victory Friday night at Harrington Village.
Wolf equaled the longest outing of his career working eight innings and allowing just one run on three hits to move to 5-2 on the season. The 10 strikeouts were just one shy of the junior lefthander's career best total of 11 achieved earlier this season at Wake Forest (March 16). Lowering his ERA to 2.26, Wolf has surrendered two or fewer earned runs in nine of his 12 starts this season.
Stowers connected on a solo home run in the second inning to start the scoring for the Cardinals (31-14, 11-11 ACC), while Campbell delivered a two-run homer in the eighth inning to cap the scoring for the road club. Campbell was 2-for-4 overall and added a walk and a stolen base to go with his second home run of the season. Stowers, who has reached base safely in 28 straight games, walked in addition to his fourth round-tripper of the season in Friday's triumph.
Devin Mann finished 2-for-5 with one RBI, one stolen base and scored once, and Jake Snider was 2-of-4 with a walk, one stolen base and one run scored. Logan Wyatt chipped in with a two-run double, his team-leading 20th double of the season.
The Cardinals opened the scoring on Friday on the solo home run from Stowers in the second. The junior outfielder turned on a 2-2 offering sending it over the left field wall for his 10th career home run.
Louisville increased its lead with a three-run fifth inning while also chasing Boston College starter Jacob Stevens. Justin Lavey led off the inning with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Fitzgerald before scoring the first run on a RBI single by Mann. Wyatt followed by scorching a two-run double to right center scoring Jake Snider and Mann for the 4-0 cushion.
The margin increased to 6-0 in the top of the eighth on the two-run homer off the bat of Campbell. Danny Oriente reached base on an error by the Eagles to begin the inning before scoring after Campbell launched the 0-2 pitch from John Witkowski over the right field wall.
Boston College (15-29, 6-19 ACC) broke through for its first run of the night in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Jack Cunningham. Junior righthander Liam Jenkins halted any hopes of a comeback by the Eagles by retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth, including two by strikeout.
Louisville and Boston College will continue the series on Saturday at 4 p.m., ET, while the weekend finale is set for Sunday at noon.
