Cardinals surrender six runs in the 10th, including five unearned, in Tuesday’s 9-5 loss
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - No. 19 Indiana used a six-run 10th inning to secure a 9-5 victory over the No. 25 Louisville baseball team on Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
After the Cardinals (37-16) evened the score at 3-3 in the ninth inning on a two-run homer from pinch hitter Ethan Stringer, the Hoosiers (34-15) regained command for good plating six runs in the 10th, including five unearned runs after a costly two-out error by Louisville. Indiana led on three different occasions in Tuesday's game after Louisville twice tied the score but was never able to take a lead of its own.
The decisive 10th inning started with a one-out walk to Luke Miller and a two-out walk to Drew Ashley by junior righty Liam Jenkins. After a call to the bullpen for lefty Adam Elliott, pinch hitter Cole Barr connected on a RBI single up the middle to score Miller for the 4-3 lead. After a walk to Jeremy Houston loaded the bases, a throwing error by Louisville shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald allowed both Ashley and Barr to score for the 6-3 advantage. Matt Lloyd followed by sending the first pitch of his at-bat from Bryan Hoeing over the right field wall for a three-run homer and a 9-3 cushion.
The Cardinals plated two runs in the bottom of the 10th on a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore Danny Oriente before Tommy Sommer closed out the win for the Hoosiers. Sommer moved to 2-0 on the season allowing two runs in 1.1 innings of relief, while Jenkins took the loss and dropped to 1-1 on the season after surrendering one earned run in less than an inning of relief.
Louisville received another strong start on the mound from freshman lefthander Reid Detmers, who allowed just one run on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings. At the plate, Oriente was 2-for-5 with his first collegiate home runs, while Josh Stowers was 2-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and his 31st stolen base.
The Hoosiers struck first Tuesday plating a run in the fourth inning on a RBI double off the bat of Logan Sowers. Lloyd earned a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on the two-bagger to right center by Sowers.
The Cardinals evened the score at 1-1 in the sixth on a two-out RBI single from Stowers. Jake Snider coaxed a one-out walk from Cam Beauchamp and moved to third on a two-out single by Logan Wyatt off B.J. Sabol before scoring on the single to left by Stowers.
Indiana regained the lead at 2-1 in the eighth inning after Sowers scored from second on Ryan Fineman's RBI single to center. Sowers started things with a one-out walk from righty Shay Smiddy and advanced to second on a single by Miller before scoring the go-ahead run without a play at the plate.
The Hoosiers added to the lead with an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning. Laren Eustace led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error by the Cardinals. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Eustace scored on a RBI single by Logan Kaletha for the 3-1 cushion.
The Cardinals pushed the game into extra innings after Stringer connected on a game-tying, pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth inning. Following a leadoff single by Lucas Dunn, Stringer launched the 1-0 pitch from Andrew Saalfrank into left field bleachers for his third home run of the season. The blast by Stringer marked the first pinch-hit home run for Louisville since Colby Fitch had a two-run pinch-hit homer against SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 19, 2016.
Up next, No. 25 Louisville concludes the regular season with a three-game series at Jim Patterson Stadium against Notre Dame, which begins Thursday at 6 p.m., ET. The weekend slate will continue Friday at 6 p.m., before concluding Saturday at 1 p.m.
