Women's Lacrosse Leads Early, but Falls to No. 15 Virginia on Senior Day
April 14, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
Caroline Blalock led the Cards with four goals.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse led for the majority of the first half, but fell to No. 15 Virginia 18-10 on Saturday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
Â
With the loss, the Cardinals move to 6-9 overall and 0-6 in ACC play. The Cavaliers improve to 9-6 and 4-2.
"We played against a top-15 team for 40 minutes really hard," said UofL head coach Scott Teeter. "We challenged the girls at the beginning to play hard for 60 minutes. I can say that they honestly did that. They were there until the final buzzer playing hard. Great teams will make you pay for mistakes, and Virginia made us pay at times today."
Â
After falling behind 2-0 early, the Cardinals got two goals each from Caroline Blalock and Madison Hoover to give them a 4-2 lead. They maintained the lead for the majority of the first half and went into the locker room tied at 6-6 as Sarah Blalock and Ally Hall added first half goals.
Â
A little over a minute into the second half, Tessa Chad's first goal of the game gave the Cards a 7-6 lead and then Caroline Blalock scored her third goal of the game to pull back even at 8-8.
Â
But, the Cavaliers scored six straight following the Blalock goal to pull ahead, 14-8, and never trailed the rest of the way.
Â
Caroline Blalock led the way with four goals on nine shots to give her 41 goals on the year. Hoover added two goals in her last home game.
Â
Jillian Balog, Sarah Blalock, Chad, and Hall finished with a goal each for the Cards. Sarah Blalock and Molly Marshall finished with a team-high three ground balls.
Â
Lexie Ball had five saves in the first half and finished with eight for the game.
Â
Louisville remained in contention with the Cavaliers most of the way despite struggling to maintain possession as Virginia won draw controls, 23-7.
It marked the final home game for 11 seniors as they were all recognized pregame.
"I think the whole senior class embraced the coaching change at the beginning of the season and they have worked hard all season," added Teeter. "It's completely different systems that we run right now, but they had an open mind and we threw a lot at them. There was a lot of change, and they just kept coming back for more. As a head coach, that makes me thrilled and I cannot thank them enough for that."
