Wyatt, Britton, Fitzgerald and Bianco connect for first collegiate home runs in 16-10 victory
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Logan Wyatt had a career best five RBIs and was among four different Cardinals to connect on their first collegiate home runs as the No. 8 Louisville baseball team remained unbeaten with Tuesday's 16-10 victory against Morehead State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Setting a career high inĀ hits as well as RBIs, Wyatt finished 4-for-4 at the plate with a double andĀ two walks to go with his first collegiate round-tripper for the Cardinals, who moved to 12-0 on the season to continue the program's third best start in head coach Dan McDonnell's 12 seasons. Louisville matched its highest scoring output of the season on Tuesday while the 21 hits were the most since finishing with 22 against Western Michigan on Feb. 21, 2014.
The four home runs for the Cardinals were the most in a single game since they had four against Clemson on May 13, 2017. Joining Wyatt with their first home runs as Cardinals on Tuesday were freshman Zach Britton, sophomore Tyler Fitzgerald and freshman Ben Bianco. Britton was 3-for-3 with a double, one walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Fitzgerald added a single and drove in two runs to go with his first homer, while Bianco came off the bench to add a double with his home run in his two plate appearances.
Junior Devin Mann added two hits, including a double, with three walks, three runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore Drew Campbell added two hits and two RBIs. On the mound, junior righthander Bryan Hoeing moved to 2-0 on the season while matching a career-high with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.
The Cardinals started fast Tuesday scoring 11 runs in the first three innings and plating at least one run in each of the first seven innings against the Eagles (6-6). Louisville gained command with a five-run first inning as Wyatt connected for a two-run double, sophomore Justin Lavey added a two-run triple and Britton had a RBI single. The lead moved to 6-0 in the second inning on a RBI single from Wyatt.
After Morehead State plated its first run on a RBI sacrifice fly from Eli Boggess in the top of the third, the Cardinals answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Britton and Fitzgerald started the inning with back-to-back solo home runs before a pair of errors by the Eagles allowed the third run of the frame to score. Campbell added a two-run single to push the margin to 11-1.
Louisville added a run in the fourth on a RBI groundout by Fitzgerald before MSU cut into the margin with a five-run fifth inning. Boggess had a two-run single before Trevor Snyder added a three-run homer.
The Cardinals extended the margin to 14-6 in the bottom of the fifth on Wyatt's home run, a two-run shot to right field. They added another run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Mann. After the Eagles added a run in the top of the seventh, Louisville capped its night offensively with Bianco's solo home run to center in the bottom of the inning. MSU scored a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth for the final margin.
Up next, No. 8 Louisville opens its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with a visit from No. 13 North Carolina this weekend at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals and Tar Heels are slated to play Friday at 6 p.m., ET, Saturday at 1 p.m., and Sunday at noon.
