LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse opened ACC play with a 14-9 loss to No. 18 Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. With the defeat, the Cardinals fall to 5-2 in the Teeter Era.
"I thought we battled hard for 60 minutes today," said UofL head coach Scott Teeter. "We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole towards the end of the first half, but battled back to get it within one. We had opportunities to make plays, just as many as Notre Dame did, but Notre Dame just finished at a little bit of a higher rate than we did today. I was happy with our effort, and I thought that we showed a lot of grit, intensity, and heart."
The Cardinals got on the board first as Madison Hoover found the back of the net in the opening minute of the game. Caroline Blalock eventually gave the Cardinals the 2-1 lead, however, Notre Dame countered with six unanswered goals.
The Fighting Irish took an 8-3 lead into the break after Julia Wood and Notre Dame's Diana Kelly traded goals to end the half.
Notre Dame extended their lead to 9-3 to start the second half, but the Cardinals quickly answered with a goal from Tessa Chad.
After another goal by the Fighting Irish to increase their lead to 10-4, the Cardinals went on a 5-0 run to pull within one. Blalock added two goals to complete the hat trick, while Chad scored her second goal of the half. Emily Howell and Jillian Balog each scored one goal.
Despite a hard-fought effort from Louisville, Notre Dame finished the game with a 5-0 run of their own, defeating the Cardinals 14-9.
Blalock led the way for Louisville with three goals, six draw controls, and three ground balls. Wood scored once and grabbed a team-high six ground balls.
In goal, Lexie Ball finished the game with seven saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, March 10 for an ACC matchup against Duke in Durham, N.C.
