Wyatt goes 2-for-3 with a run scored; Wolf allows just one earned run with nine strikeouts in the loss
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No.11 Louisville baseball team dropped its series-opener against No. 10 Clemson with Friday night's 3-1 loss at Jim Patterson Stadium.
A pair of unearned runs in the second inning proved to be the difference for the Tigers (17-5, 4-3 ACC), who registered their first ever road win against the Cardinals (17-5, 3-4 ACC). Louisville matched a season low in scoring despite finishing with an 8-6 advantage in hits.
The Cardinals were unable to take advantage of another strong start from junior lefthander Adam Wolf, who had nine strikeouts and allowed just one earned run on four hits in a career-long 8.0 innings. The native of Milan, Ohio suffered his first collegiate loss dropping his career record to 9-1, including 3-1 this season.
Sophomore Logan Wyatt registered his team-leading 10th multi-hit performance of the season as the first baseman was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored the only run of the night for Louisville. Wyatt has reached base safely in 19 straight games and leads the Cardinals with a .346 batting average and .510 on-base percentage to go with 18 runs scored and 17 RBIs.
The Tigers struck first scoring their two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. After a one-out error by the Cardinals allowed Robert Jolly to reach base, Drew Wharton followed with a single before Kyle Wilkie drove both runners home with his two-out double to right field.
The Cardinals cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second inning on junior Pat Rumoro's RBI sacrifice fly to center. Wyatt singled through the right side to start the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a single by sophomore Ethan Stringer before Rumoro drove him home.
Clemson pushed the lead to the final 3-1 margin in the fourth inning on Wharton's RBI double to left field. Chris Williams led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a groundout before scoring on Wharton's sixth double of the season.
Louisville left 10 runners on base in the loss, including two in each of the final two innings. The No.11 Cardinals and No.10 Tigers are slated to continue their weekend series on Saturday at 1 p.m., ET, while Sunday's finale is also set for a 1 p.m., start.
