Cards fall 5-2 to UMass, beat Eastern Michigan 10-6

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team split a pair of games in the Louisville Softball Classic Saturday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals fell 5-2 to UMass, but rebounded to beat Eastern Michigan 10-6 in the nightcap. Louisville (18-5) will wrap up the weekend against Bradley Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Admission is free.

UMass 5 – Louisville 2
The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead, but UMass scored three runs in the third and two more in the second en route to a 5-2 victory which snapped Louisville's 10-game win streak.

Louisville jumped on the scoreboard in the second when senior Nicole Pufahl led off with a walk, took second on junior Megan Hensley's base hit and moved to third and scored on a pair of errors.

UMass (9-9) capitalized on three hits, two walks and an error to score three runs in the third. Carolina Videtto drew a one-out walk and Jena Cozza followed with a hit to put two runners on for Erin Stacevicz's RBI hit. Kaycee Carbone's double plated Cozza and Stacevicz scored when Madison Gimpl reached on an error.

The Cards got a run back in the home half of the fourth to cut the lead to one run. Hensley got the Cardinals started with a leadoff hit and was lifted for pinch-runner Catie Barber who moved to second on senior Jamie Soles' single, took third on a groundout by senior Jenna Jordan. Senior Alison Szydlowski stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI hit to make the score 3-2.

Stacevicz's two-run triple in the third extended the UMass lead to 5-2. Amy Smith singled and Cozza was hit by a pitch to set up Stacevicz who drilled a two-out tripled to left field.

Hensley (5-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits and struck out nine in seven innings. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Snyder also had two hits to pace the Cardinals offensively.

Kiara Oliver (5-1) got the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits and striking out three in a complete game effort. Stacevicz led the Minutewomen at the plate going 3-for 4 with three RBIs and a run.

Sophomore Celene Funke went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI and freshman Maddy Newman went 3-for-4 with two RBs and a run to help Louisville overcome a 5-2 deficit and beat Eastern Michigan 10-6 in the second game of the day.

Eastern Michigan (4-15) used two walks and three hits to jump to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Haley Hostetler and Olivia Logan earned walks to put two on for Amanda Akles' RBI double and Lauren Holdsworth's two-run single.

The Cardinals answered with two runs in the home half of the first. Funke singled, stole second and scored when sophomore Caitlin Ferguson reached on an error. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Megan Hensley plated Ferguson to pull Louisville within a run.

The Eagles pushed the lead back to three runs in the third inning. Akles singled, and was lifted for pinch runner Alex Peters who took second on a passed ball and third on a groundout. Holdsworth reached on a fielder's choice which saw Peters safe at the plate. Ariana Chretien's RBI hit plated Holdsworth to make the score 5-2.

EMU countered once again with a run in the fifth when Brandice Olmos singled and pinch runner Casey Skeens scored on Anderson's hit to cut Louisville's lead to one run.

The sixth inning brought three more Louisville runs to put the game away. Ferguson delivered a one-out hit and Hensley followed with an RBI double. Pinch runner freshman Jordyn Wolfe came home on junior Madison Cousineau's base hit and Newman drove in Pufahl who had reached on an error to bring the score to 10-6.

Junior Darrianne Hale (1-0) got the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and striking out three in 4.1 innings of relief. Freshman Danielle Watson picked up her first save after surrendering two hits and striking out two in the final two innings of the game.

Kiara Hurley (0-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs, four earned, on seven hits and striking out two in 3.2 innings. Lauren Holdsworth paced the Eagles offensively with a 2-for-4, three RBI performance at the plate.
