Cards defeat Lehigh 14-1, fall 5-3 to No. 24 South Carolina
Â
Louisville 14 – Lehigh 1
Ferguson went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run and senior Alison Szydlowski collected a career-high four RBIs to lead Louisville to a 14-1 win over Lehigh (0-1).
Â
After playing through two scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke through in the third behind senior Alison Szydlowski's three-run homer. Ferguson started the inning with a single and junior Sidney Melton walked to set up Szydlowski's shot over the centerfield fence.
Â
The Cards tacked on two more runs in the fourth when senior Jamie Soles singled and freshman Catie Barber entered as a pinch-runner. Sophomore Celene Funke reached on a bunt single. Both runners advanced on an error and crossed the plate on Ferguson's double to make it a 5-0 game.
Â
The Mountain Hawks got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Carolyn Wright delivered a one-out double, Ashley Rabago singled and Reva Alderman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter, Rachel Timberman was also hit by a pitch to bring Wright home. Freshman Danielle Watson entered the game to pitch and retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Â
Louisville answered with two runs in the fifth. Freshman Kyra Snyder and Soles connected on back-to-back two-out hits and an infield hit by Funke followed by an error on the throw plated Snyder. Consecutive walks to Ferguson and Melton brought Soles home and gave the Cards a 7-1 lead.
Â
In the sixth inning, Louisville capitalized on three hits, three walks and two sacrifice flies to put up seven more runs, highlighted by Melton's two-run single.
Â
Watson (5-2) picked up the win, holding Lehigh scoreless and striking out three in 2.2 innings of relief. Megan Hensley surrendered one earned run on three hits and struck out one in 3.1 innings, she also went 2-for-3 with a hit and an RBI at the plate. Soles and Funke each had a pair of hits.
Â
"I think we did a very good job playing defense and got some great pitching production," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Offensively, we attacked and went after good pitches."
Â
Parker Boyd (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and striking out four in 5.0 innings. Wright, Mary-Hannah Smith, and Ashley Rabago accounted for the Mountain Hawks' three hits.
Â
South Carolina 5 – Louisville 3
Ferguson and Melton each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Funke went 2-for-3 with a run to pace the Louisville offensively, but it wasn't enough as No. 24 South Carolina took an early lead and held off the Cardinals 5-3.
Â
The Gamecocks (11-1) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second when Krystan White singled and Kamryn Watts reached on a fielder's choice to set up Kenzi Maguire's two-run double.
Â
The Cards countered in the fourth. Senior Nicole Pufahl singled, moved to third on Jordan's base hit and came home on freshman Kyra Snyder's RBI hit to cut the lead to one.
Â
South Carolina got the run back in the fifth after Maguire doubled and scored on a single by Jana Johns to push the Gamecocks' lead back to two runs.
Â
Once again, Louisville responded in the home half of the inning, this time using back-to-doubles by Funke and Ferguson to make a 3-2 game.
Â
Alyssa VanDerveer's solo home run in the sixth brought the score to 4-2. Kamryn Watts singled, and, two batters later, Mackenzie's RBI hit gave the Gamecocks a 5-2 lead.
Â
The Cardinals answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Soles walked and was lifted for pinch-runner freshman Jordyn Wolfe. Consecutive hits by Funke and Ferguson loaded the bases for Melton whose fielder's choice saw Funke out at second, but sent Newman home to make the score 5-3.
Â
Watson (5-3) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits and striking out three in 5.1 innings. Hensley tossed 1.2 shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits and fanning three. The Cardinals produced nine hits in the game and left nine runners on.
Â
Cayla Drotar (6-0) picked up the win after giving up one earned run on four hits and striking out one in 4.0 innings. Dixie Raley surrendered two earned runs on five hits and struck out three in 3.0 innings to record the save. Maguire, Boesel and VanDerveer and Watts each had two hits as the Gamecocks collected 10 hits and left 11 on base.
Â
"We had opportunities in scoring position and, in this game, we did not capitalize," said Pearsall. "I think the teams played evenly, but South Carolina was certainly more productive with runners in scoring position. We've got to change our mindset when it comes to that. I thought we played well defensively and got good performances from Danielle and Megan."
