Cards beat Morgan State 12-4 in five innings, hold off South Alabama 5-4 in eight innings
Â
Louisville 12 - Morgan State 4 (five innings)
Senior Jamie Soles went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs and freshman Danielle Watson did not give up a run or a hit while striking out six in 3.1 innings of relief to help the Cards beat Morgan State 12-4 in five innings.
Â
In the first inning, the Cardinals capitalized on three errors and five hits, highlighted by sophomore Caitlin Ferguson's two run triple to jump to a 7-0 lead.
Â
The Bears (3-6) answered with three runs in the home half of the first. Damali Young led off with a solo home run. Walks to Gabriella Gorosave and Evvie Buehlman and a hit by Stormy McIntyre loaded the bases. Mikaela Browdy and Jalian Young each walked to plate Gorosave and Buehlman, bringing the score to 7-3.
Â
Morgan State cut the lead to three runs in the second when Young singled, took second on Gorosave's sacrifice bunt and scored on Buehlman's RBI hit.
Â
Louisville used five hits to tally four more runs in the fourth. Ferguson got the inning started with a walk and scored on senior Alison Szydlowski's double. Soles followed with an RBI triple and crossed the plate on senior Jenna Jordan's single. Freshman Kyra Snyder's base hit sent Jordan home to give Louisville an 11-4 lead.
Â
The Cardinals' offense continued in the fifth when Soles singled and eventually came home on freshman Maddy Newman's bases-loaded walk to bring the final score to 12-4.
Â
"We had the opportunity to get some of our younger players in to see what they were capable of doing and they did some very good things," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "By and large, I was pleased with our team performance."
Â
Louisville 5- South Alabama 4 (eight innings)
Freshman Maddy Newman was safe at the plate on sophomore Celene Funke's fielder's choice to score the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eight to lift the Cards to a 5-4 win over the Jaguars (6-7).
Â
Senior Nicole Pufahl led Louisville at the plate, going 2-for-2 and executing a sacrifice bunt to push Newman to third to set up the winning run in the eighth. Danielle Watson (7-3) picked up her second win of the day after giving up one earned run and striking out three in 2.1 innings of relief.
Â
The teams played through three scoreless innings before the Cards broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Jamie Soles drew a two-out walk and junior Megan Hensley followed with a hit. Freshman Catie Barber entered to run for Soles and sprinted around to score when an error allowed senior Jenna Jordan to reach safely. Freshman Kyra Snyder's RBI single brought Hensley home to make the score 2-0.
Â
Louisville tacked on another run in the fifth when junior Sidney Melton singled, stole second, took third on senior Alison Szydlowski's sacrifice bunt and scored on a RBI hit by Soles.
Â
In the sixth, Abby Krzywiecki drew a two-out walk and Lyric Cabral broke up Hensley's no-hitter with a single to place runners on the corners. Kristian Foster followed with an RBI single to score pinch runner Taylor Stevens and an error on the play sent Cabral home. Freshman Danielle Watson entered to pitch and a wild pitch sent Foster home to even the score at 3-3.
Â
The Cards answered in the home half of the sixth when Pufahl and Funke registered back-to-back hits and Sidney Melton earned a walk to load the bases for sophomore Caitlin Ferguson who was hit by a pitch to bring home Pufahl and put the Louisville back on top 4-3.
Â
Once again, the Jaguars countered in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Brittani Reid drew a leadoff walk and moved to third when an error on MC Nichols sacrifice bunt. A walk to Katelyn Gruich loaded the bases for Haleigh Lowe's RBI single to make it a 4-4 game.
Â
The contest remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Newman was placed at second base due to the international tiebreaker rule. Pufahl bunted her to third and she slid in under the tag at the plate when Funke grounder to the right side of the infield.
Â
Hensley got the start and did not give up a hit in 5.2 innings of play before surrender a pair of singles in the sixth. She gave up three runs, one earned and struck out one. Seven different players recorded hits as the Cards outhit the Jaguars 8-3.
Â
Devin Brown (4-4) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and striking out one in 2.1 innings of relief.
Â
"We came out and did a great job in the beginning," said Pearsall. "I thought we were very pumped up. I thought our team did a great job of understanding who they were getting ready to play. We got three runs on the board. And again, the thing that has been our Achilles' heel, we made a very crucial mistak in that game and a few more that followed. If you add walks to that equation, and it ends up going into extra innings. I was very proud that, in the extra inning, everything was executed exactly how we need to do it, both on the mound and Nicole putting down a great bunt and Maddy Newman reading the ground ball and going for the plate on that infield ground ball.
