
Cardinals Capture Four Victories on Second Night of IU Invite

The Louisville women are currently in second, while the men are in third.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team captured four wins on the second night of competition at the IU Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday evening. After two days of action, the Louisville women are in second with 1005 points behind NC State with 1053.5 points. The Louisville men moved ahead of Arizona State after this evening's session and are currently in third with 773 points.
The Louisville women captured their third consecutive NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200 medley relay to open up the evening as Alina Kendzior (24.50), Mariia Astashkina (27.03), Grace Oglesby (23.01) and Casey Fanz (21.77) combined to finish third in a time of 1:36.31. The men's 200 medley relay of Nicolas Albiero (21.63), Evgenii Somov (23.89), Zach Harting (20.71) and Andrej Barna (18.96) earned an NCAA provisional cut, finishing second with a time of 1:25.19.
Building on the momentum from the relay, Oglesby and Mallory Comerford staged a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly, earning NCAA A cut times of 50.75 and 50.94 respectively. Alena Kraus finished fourth with an NCAA B cut time of 52.52, while Nastja Govejsek also achieved a B cut with an eighth place finish in a time of 53.71.
In the men's event, Albiero touched third in an NCAA B cut time of 46.05. Harting (46.76) and Nikkos Sofianidis (47.05) also swam in the A final, finishing fifth and seventh respectively with a pair of NCAA B cuts.
Sophie Cattermole was the Cardinals' top finisher in the 400 IM, dropping over three seconds from her prelims swim to place 10th in an NCAA B cut time of 4:12.32. Carley Lowe also secured an NCAA B cut, finishing 12th with a time of 4:16.42.
Daniel Sos also dropped considerable time from his morning swim to pick up a second place finish in the men's 400 IM with an NCAA B cut time of 3:47.10. Jarrett Jones won the consolation heat, placing ninth overall with a B cut time of 3:51.29.
Kraus and Arina Openysheva earned the Louisville women their second consecutive 1-2 finish of the night in the 200 free as Kraus captured the win in a time of 1:46.06, followed by Openysheva with a 1:46.15. Both times were well under the NCAA B standard. Annette Schultz (1:47.26) and Katie Schorr (1:47.35) also competed in the A final, finishing sixth and seventh respectively. Diana Dunn won the consolation heat with an NCAA B cut time of 1:46.46, which was the third fastest time of the night.
Barna was Louisville's top-performer in the men's 200 free, registering a seventh place finish in an NCAA B cut time of 1:35.20. Colton Paulson also achieved the B standard, finishing 11th with a 1:36.30.
In the 100 breast, Morgan Friesen placed fifth with an NCAA B cut time of 1:00.08. Astashkina also competed in the A final, recording a seventh place finish in a time of 1:00.58, also an NCAA B cut. In the B final, Kaylee Wheeler picked up a B cut to finish 12th with a time of 1:01.53.
Somov placed second in the men's 100 breast, finishing with an NCAA B cut time of 53.20. Michael Hampel dropped nearly a second from his morning swim to take 10th overall in a time of 54.69.
In the 100 back, Kendzior swam to a third place finish, stopping the clock in an NCAA B cut time of 53.07. Ashlyn Schoof posted a seventh place finish with a time of 54.14.
Albiero wrapped up the final individual swimming event of the evening with a fourth place finish in the 100 back, touching in an NCAA B cut time of 46.73. Sofianidis took sixth with another B cut time of 47.25.
Molly Fears (273.25) and Michaela Sliney (268.65) each recorded a pair of NCAA Zone qualifying scores to finish 1-2 once again on the 1-meter. Brianna Price (236.55), Anika Holland (234.80) and Allyson Schafer (231.25) finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. Libby Lambert was ninth with a score of 220.85.
On the men's 3-meter, Daniel Fecteau took third with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 353.30. Daniel Pinto finished just behind with an NCAA Zone cut score of 352.90. Kivanc Gur was seventh with a score of 313.95.
The 800 free relay team of Cattermole (1:46.88), Openysheva (1:46.32), Kraus (1:46.25) and Comerford (1:43.47) closed out their evening with a dominant win in a time of 7:02.92. In the men's race, Harting (1:35.92), Barna (1:34.45), Paulson (1:36.17) and Marcelo Acosta (1:36.02) placed fourth with a 6:22.56.
The Cards will return to action tomorrow morning for the final day of the IU Invitational. Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
