Cardinals Defeat Wake Forest 2-0 on Friday Night

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Wake Forest 2-0 on Friday night in Spry Stadium. Emina Ekic scored in the first half while Callie McKinney scored in the second half to secure the road win and three points in ACC play for the Cardinals.
"Tonight was a great team win against a very talented Wake Forest team," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I am very proud of this group, they are extremely focused and I thought we played well tonight."
The Cardinals improve to 11-3 on the season and 5-2 in ACC play. The Demon Deacons fall to 6-7-1 overall and 2-5 in ACC play.Â
While the first half was tightly contested, the Cardinals were able to break through in the 23rd minute. Ekic beat three defenders and sent a shot past a diving keeper for the 1-0 lead. The Louisville defense held Wake Forest to just one shot in the first half for a 4-1 shot advantage. The Cards held a 3-2 corner kick advantage. Louisville's Gabby Kouzelos was not tested in the first half while Wake's Nonie Frishette finished with three saves.Â
Louisville wasted no time in the second half, scoring off a set piece in the 52nd minute. McKinney headed a long free kick from Gabrielle Vincent into the goal for the 2-0 lead. Wake had their first chance of the match in the 56th minute but Kouzelos came up with a save.Â
The Cardinals were able to keep the majority of possession in the second half, creating several opportunities.  Louisville had a great chance when the keeper came out of the penalty box but Delaney Snyder's shot hit the post.Â
Maisie Whitsett had a close shot in the 79th minute but the ball sailed just over the crossbar. The Demon Deacons had their final opportunity in the 85th minute but Kouzelos grabbed the ball for the save.Â
Louisville finished the match with an 11-4 shot advantage and a 5-4 corner kick advantage. Kouzelos finished with two saves while Frishette finished with four.Â
Louisville will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 18 as they travel to No. 11 Duke for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.Â
