Cardinals Fall at No. 10 Duke 2-1

Cards unable to overcome a late Duke penalty kick
DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 2-1 at No. 10 Duke on Thursday night at Koskinen Stadium. Louisville falls to 11-4 on the season and 5-3 in the league while Duke improves to 12-2-2 on the year and 6-1-1 in the ACC.
While Duke took possession to start the match, the Cardinals were able to take possession and strike first. In the second minute, Emina Ekic took a cross from Allison Whitfield and beat her defender inside the box and slotted a shot through the goal to the right post.Â
Louisville was able to keep possession for a good amount of the time. Duke was able to score the equalizer in the 23rd minute. Gabby Kouzelos came off her line to make a save and the ball was crossed to Kayla McCoy who tapped the ball in the goal to make it 1-1.
The rest of the half the teams traded possession but neither were able to convert it into another goal. Duke held a 6-5 edge in shots while both teams had one corner kick in the half. Â Â
Duke held possession for most of the second half but the Cardinal defense held the Blue Devils at bay for the majority of the half. In the 79th minute, Duke scored on a penalty kick. Karlie Paschall was able to get the ball past Kouzelos to take a 2-1 lead.Â
The Cardinals pressed forward were unable to break down the Duke defense. Â
Duke finished the match with a 14-5 shot advantage and a 7-1 corner kick advantage. Kouzelos finished with five saves while Duke's Brooke Heinsohn finished with two.Â
The Cardinals will wrap up the three game road stint at NC State on Sunday, Oct. 21 for a 1:00 kick off. Â
