Cardinals improve to 5-1 with a second straight road win
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 1-0 win over Southeast Missouri (3-3) on Monday at Houck Field. Freshman Morgan Dewey scored her first goal of the season to lift the Cardinals to their second straight road victory.
"Super proud of our gutsy performance today," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Southeast Missouri was very organized and difficult to break down, but we kept at it and it eventually paid off. I am so happy for Morgan Dewey, she played in her first collegiate game. She worked hard for the opportunity to get in to this game, and it certainly paid off."
The Cardinals dominated possession for most of the match, finishing the game with a 16-8 shot advantage. The Cardinal defense held the Redhawks to just two shots in the first half. Overall, the Louisville defensive line held Southeast Missouri to just two shots on goal.
In the 84th minute, Dewey netted the game-winner. Junior Kennadi Carbin crossed the ball over the box to a Dewey who took the shot past the Redhawk's Kindra Lierz's right and into the back of the net.
Both teams finished with four corner kicks and the Cardinals held a 6-2 shot on goal advantage. Louisville continued it's season streak of holding teams without a first half goal.
Louisville keeper Gabrielle Kouzelos (5-1) earned the shutout, making two saves. It was the third season shutout for the redshirt freshman. Lierz finished with five saves in the loss.
The Cardinals will return to Lynn Stadium on Friday night, hosting Purdue at 7:30 p.m.
