Women’s Golf Finishes Tied for Fifth at Minnesota Invitational

The Cardinals put together the second-best team tournament score in school history.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A day after setting the school record for the lowest team single-round score in school history, Louisville's women's golf team achieved another historic feat.
The Cardinals completed the Minnesota Invitational on Tuesday tied for fifth after shooting a 9-under-par 855 in Woodbury, Minn. It's the second-best score in a tournament school history, only trailing the program record of 23-under-par set in 2008.
"We take away a lot of positives from this tournament," head coach Courtney Trimble said. "We have to eliminate a few mistakes with our scoring clubs, but even without our best stuff, we saw that we can still compete with best teams in country."
Lauren Hartlage secured her first top-five finish of the season, the fifth of her young career. The sophomore from Elizabethtown, Ky., matched a career best, shooting a 7-under-par 209, to tie for fifth in the 78-player field. She recorded 11 birdies in three rounds, while tallying the second-best mark for par-5 scoring with a 4.50 average.
Molly Skapik started her senior campaign with momentum. The Miamisburg, Ohio, native, who won the Kentucky Women's Open in July, logged a career-best 5-under-par 211. She finished the tournament with an eagle and 11 birdies to tie for 10th. Impressively, she had the second-best par-4 scoring mark with a 3.83 average.
Olivia Cason made a strong push in the final round of action, climbing 15 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 24th. The junior shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to complete the three rounds at even-par 216.
Newcomer Kristin Engle rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals, capping her first tournament at Louisville with a 6-over-par 222. She tied for 46th.
"I think this gave us a confidence boost to start the fall," Trimble added. "We're disappointed with where we finished, but we learned a lot from these two days and it gives us an idea of what we need to work on moving forward."
Louisville returns to action in two weeks, playing in the Golfweek Women's Conference Challenge from Sept. 25-27 in Vail, Colo.
