Bordner wins Cape Cod League championship with Brewster; five Cardinals among top 90 pro prospects in the Cape
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team has returned to campus following another busy summer of action in wooden bat leagues around the nation. Following the program's fourth College World Series appearance to cap the 2017 season, the Cardinals had 24 players assigned to six leagues this summer.
Listed below are notes and highlights from the summer performances for the Cardinals. The highlights included a Cape Cod League championship for righthanded pitcher Sam Bordner with the Brewster Whitecaps. Bordner was one of five Louisville players listed among the top 90 professional prospects in the Cape Cod League by either Baseball America or D1Baseball.
Since returning to campus for the fall semester, which kicked off on Aug. 21, Louisville players have participated in team meetings, a conditioning test and individual workouts. Louisville is scheduled to begin full-squad fall practices next week while the first weekend of intra-squad scrimmages at Jim Patterson Stadium is tentatively set for Sept. 8-9. The annual Pizza Bowl series, which concludes fall workouts for the Cardinals, is planned for mid-October.
• Rising junior righthander Sam Bordner followed his dominant collegiate season with a strong summer campaign with the Brewster Whitecaps, which won the 2017 Cape Cod League championship. Bordner made 10 total appearances this summer, eight in the regular season and two in the postseason, registering a 2.81 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 16.0 innings pitched. Bordner was ranked 35th in Baseball America's list of Top Prospects in the Cape Cod League.
• Outfielder Josh Stowers played in 27 games for the Chatham Anglers registering a .253 batting average, three home runs, 19 RBI, 12 stolen bases and 16 runs scored. Stowers, who is entering his junior season, hit safely in eight of his last nine games for Chatham. Stowers was ranked 27th in Baseball America's list of Top Prospects in the Cape Cod League.
• Lefthander Adam Wolf had an impressive summer with Chatham registering a 1.76 ERA with a 1-1 record and two saves in 11 relief outings. The rising junior had 21 strikeouts in 15.1 innings, including a pair of punchouts in three shutout innings in his final outing of the summer in the playoffs. Wolf was ranked 64th in D1Baseball's list of Top Prospects in the Cape Cod League.
• Infielder Tyler Fitzgerald played in 32 games for the Bourne Braves hitting .241 with one home run and eight RBIs. In seven postseason games for Bourne, which lost to Brewster in the final round, Fitzgerald hit .455 with two RBIs and five runs scored. Fitzgerald was ranked 89th in D1Baseball's list of Top Prospects in the Cape Cod League.
• Righthander Bryan Hoeing capped the summer ranked No. 45 in D1Baseball's list of Top Prospects in the Cape Cod League after finishing the regular season with a 1-1 record, 4.90 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 14.2 innings.
NEW ENGLAND LEAGUE NOTES
• Righthanded pitcher Shay Smiddy nine appearances for the Newport Gulls, including two starts, registering a 1.71 ERA with a 1-0 record and 28 strikeouts in 21.0 innings. He capped his summer with six no-hit, scoreless innings and six strikeouts in a victorious start against Danbury on August 1.
• Infielder Logan Wyatt played in 22 games this summer for the Sanford Mainers accumulating a .258 batting average with seven RBIs and eight runs scored.
NORTHWOODS LEAGUE NOTES
• In 10 games for the Madison Mallards, infielder Jake Snider hit .395 with three doubles, 11 runs scored, six walks and two RBIs.
• Rising junior catcher Zeke Pinkham played in seven games for the Rochester Honkers hitting .381 with five RBIs, 10 runs scored and seven walks.
PERFECT GAME LEAGUE NOTES
• Rising sophomore Adam Elliott had a busy summer with the Albany Dutchmen working both as a lefthanded pitcher and outfielder. On the mound, Elliott was 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 13.0 innings and five total appearances. At the plate, he hit .316 with one home run, nine RBIs and 14 runs scored in 19 games.
PERFECT GAME LEAGUE NOTES
• Lefthander Rabon Martin made eight appearances this summer with the Holly Springs Salamanders, including one start, finishing with a 2-0 record, 2.92 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 12.1 innings.
