Cottrell grabs gold in a wild finish in the 50-meter breaststroke
University of Louisville swimmer Andrea Cottrell won a gold medal in the 50M breaststroke at the World University Games this morning in Taipei.
Â
UofL's All-American had to battle Australia's Leiston Pickett down the stretch to get to the wall, but Cottrell was able to edge for the gold by just hundredths of a second with a time of 30.77 to Pickett's 31.82. The bronze medal position was a tie between Sweden's Jessica Eriksson and the Ukraine's Mariia Liver, who posted a time of 31.50, just edging out Poland's Dominika Sztandera's time of 31.59 in a wild finish.
Â
This brings the swimming events to a close at the World University Games, which continue in other venues until Aug. 30.
