Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford Shine in First Day of Prelims at World Championships

Worrell is seeded second in 100 fly and Comerford helps relay qualify first with a little help from Worrell.
The University of Louisville Cardinals had a busy morning in the first day of preliminaries at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest.

Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford will both advance to semifinals and rising sophomore Andrej Barna just missed advancing by less than a blink of an eye.

"This was a nice start for session one here in Budapest. Kelsi Worrell went a lifetime best in the 100 fly and swam a great leg in the 400 Free Relay and Mallory Comerford anchored the relay to help us qualify first," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero, who is the assistant coach for the women's Team USA.

Kelsi Worrell touched first in her heat of the women's 100M Fly, posting a time of  56.44 for a new personal best. to qualify 2nd for the semi-finals. The time shaves .04 off her previous best of 56.48 that she boarded at the 2016 Olympic Trials. Her performance makes her the fifth fastest swim in history in the event, moving past Olympic silver medalist Penny Oleksiak (56.46). Kelsi's time is just under a full second better than she went to win the U.S. Trials in June (57.38). She is closing in on Dana Vollmer's American Record of 55.98, set in 2012. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden qualified first. She set the world record at 55.48 from the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Also in the 100 fly, Cardinal Nastja Govejsek, swimming for Slovenia, placed 25th overall in a time of 1:00.25

In the men's 100 breast, Cardinal Carlos Claverie, who swims for his native Venezuela, finished 28th overall in a time of 1:00.83, just .01 off his personal best. Great Britain's Adam Peaty was the top qualifier with a 58.21.

The American 4x100 free relay had two Cardinals swimming in prelims. Mallory Comerford and Kelsi Worrell helped lead led the Americans  Relay to the top seed after prelims. The team of Lia Neal, Kelsi Worrell, Olivia Smoliga and Mallory Comerford posted a 3:33.35. Mallory had an anchor split of 52.47 and Kelsi went 53.27. Team USA team posted the fastest time this morning by almost a full second with ahead of the Netherlands' foursome's 3:34.26 and Australia, which went 3:35.18.

Cardinal Andrej Barna anchored the Serbian 4 x 100 Free Relay with a split of 49.40 to finish 9th overall, just missing tonight's final by .01. Â Brazil took the top seed with a time of 3:12.34.
