Cardinals score early in overtime for the win
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The University of Louisville (10-4, 2-2) lacrosse team defeated No. 12 Virginia Tech (11-4, 2-2) 13-12 in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Meghan Siverson lifted the Cardinals with a goal on the first possession in the overtime period.
"I am so incredibly proud of our players," said head coach Kellie Young. "This was a great win from end-to-end. Every player committed to our scout and attacked the plan with confidence."
The Cardinals started the game with a 2-0 run. Hannah Koloski scored first at the 28:34 mark then Elise Koehl found Jillian Balog 30 second later for a 2-0 lead. The Hokies answered with a 2-0 run of their own to tie the game with 15:53 left in the first half.
Siverson scored a minute later off a pass from Emily Howell. Then the Hokies scored two straight to take a 4-3 lead with 5:38 left in the half. With just over a minute left in the half, Siverson sent a pass to Howell for the equalizer. The half ended in a 4-4 tie.Â
The Hokies started the second half on a 2-0 run to take a 6-4 lead in the first three minutes of the half. Siverson found Balog in the 26th minute to cut the lead to 6-5. Virginia Tech answered with a goal in the 23rd minute to take a 7-5 lead.Â
The Cardinals answered with a 2-0 run with free position shots from Siverson and Koloski to tie the game at 7-7 with 22 minutes left to play. That was just the beginning, both teams would match each other goal for goal.
 The Hokies took a 12-11 lead with 1:48 left to play. Balog won the draw control on the next possession and Ashley Lynch found Koehl for the equalizer with a minute left to play. The Hokies won the draw but turned the ball over, giving the Cardinals a chance at the game-winner. Louisville had two shots one went wide and then the second was saved as time expiered, resulting in a 12-12 tie at the end of regulation.Â
The Cardinals wasted no time in the overtime period. Koloski won the draw control and then Lynch hit Siverson for the game-winner 58 seconds into the overtime period for a 13-12 victory.Â
Siverson led the Cardinals with three goals and two assists while Koloski finished with four goals. Both Koehl and Lynch finished with three points. Koehl with two goals and one assist while Lynch had one goal and two assists.Â
Louisville held an impressive 17-10 edge in draw controls and a 32-22 lead in shots. The Cardinals also finished with a 17-13 lead in ground balls.Â
On the defensive end, Brittany Read finished with seven saves while Virginia Tech's Meagh Graham finished with 10. Koloski finished with three caused turnovers while five Cardinals finished with two ground balls. Koloski finished with seven draw controls while Siverson finished with six.
Louisville will be back in action next Saturday as they host No. 2 North Carolina on April 8 at the Uof L Lacrosse Stadium at noon.
