Cardinals can't stop second half Tar Heel rally
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville (10-5, 2-3) lacrosse team fell to No. 2 North Carolina 15-11 on Saturday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. Meghan Siverson and Hannah Koloski led the Cardinals with three goals each while UNC's Marie McCool finished with seven to lead the Tar Heels.
"I am mad but I am also proud of the effort we put on the field in terms of physically continuing to attack and not settling in," said head coach Kellie Young. "We need to get to a point that we understand we can play with anyone in the country and we follow the scout and do that."
Koloski got the scoring started early for the Cardinals. The senior attacker scored on the Cardinals' first possession for a 1-0 lead. North Carolina capitalized on a turnover on the next possession and tied the game in the 26th minute.
The Cardinals went on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead in the 23rd minute. Louisville capitalized on a Tar Heel turnover and Ashley Lynch found Taylor Webster for a 2-1 lead with 25 minutes left in the first half. Jillian Balog scored off a rebound and then Koloski scored after a UNC turnover.
The Tar Heels answered with strong defense, forcing the Cardinals to a shot clock violation and scoring off the turnover, cutting the lead to 4-2. The Cardinals took advantage of a turnover with Koloski putting the Cards up 5-2 at the 13:42 mark. The Tar Heels scored on the next possession to cut the lead to 5-3 with 11 minutes remaining in the half.
Louisville then went on a 2-0 run to take a 7-3 lead with 6:46 left to play in the first half. McKayla Conti scored and then Siverson scored on free position shot. The Tar Heels answered with a 3-0 run of their own. Scoring three goals in under two minutes to cut the Louisville lead to 7-6 with 2:58 left in the first half. The Cardinals played strong defense in the final minutes to end the half with a 7-6 lead.
The Tar Heels struck first in the second half, tying the game at 7-7 with 23:27 left in the game. The Cardinals answered with a free position goal from Siverson in the 22nd minute to regain the lead at 8-7. UNC then took control of the game and went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-8 lead with 10:24 left to play.
The Cardinals were able to stop the run with a 2-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 13-10 with 3:11 left to play. Balog scored with 8:15 left to play then Webster snuck the ball past the keeper at the 3:11 mark. UNC answered with a 2-0 run of their own to take a 15-10 lead. Koloski scored with 11 seconds left to cut the lead to 15-11.
North Carolina held a 39-24 shot advantage and a 17-11 advantage at the draw. The Tar Heels held a slight 13-12 edge in ground balls over the Cardinals.
Balog led the Cardinals with three ground balls. Stephanie McNamara led the Cardinals with three caused turnovers. Brittany Read finished with a season-high 14 saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action next Saturday, April 15 as they travel to Virginia.
