Men's Swimming Makes Two Finals at Day 2 Prelims
March 23, 2017 | Swimming & Diving
Both Cardinal relays will return to race
The University of Louisville men's swimming team earned two second swims today after prelims in the first full day of racing at the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.  In a blazingly first of prelims, the times to make finals were faster than in 2016 in nine of the ten possible championship heats, and the Cards set two school records just trying to make finals.
Â
The Cardinals foursome of Grigory Tarasevich (45.45), Carlos Claverie (51.02), Josh Quallen (45.19) and Trevor Carroll (42.39) for School and ACC Record  time of 3:04.05 in 400 Medley Relay.  They will be seeded fourth going into the finals this evening.
Â
The Cards set a school record in the prelims of the 200-free relay with Andrej Barna (19.62), Trevor Carroll (19.00), Grigory Tarasevich (19.23) and Josh Quallen (19.37) combined efforts to post a school record 1:17.22.  The Cardinals are seeded third in the B-final for this evening's race.
Â
In the 500 free, the top Cardinal was Zach Harting, who went 4:16.34 to finish 21st. Marcelo Acosta clocked a 4:18.04 for 27th and Etay Gurevich was 35ith with a time of 4:20.08. Jarrett Jones went 4:23.31.Â

In fact swimswam.com put together this list of eye popping stats to showcase the speed shown today:
-  Just five years ago, Martin Grodzki of Georgia won the national championship in the 500 free with a 4:12.95.  If had repeated that time this morning, he would've had to settle for the B-final.
- In 2014, Longhorn Sam Lewis narrowly missed the A-final of the 500 after swimming a 4:14.09 and placing 9th by 0.03 seconds.  Today, that same time would've meant a harrowing swim-off for 16th place and a spot in the B-final.
- Florida's 1:17.83 in prelims of the 200 free relay in 2013 qualified for the A-final. Â Today, that same time would have meant that they were not the 1st, but the 2nd alternate.
- Had Alabama not DQ'd Cal would have missed the A-final of the 400 medley relay, despite having a 3:04.95.  That time would have placed 1st almost every year up until 2015.
