Track and Field Finishes with Four Wins to Open the Outdoor Season

Cardinals look impressive in outdoor season opener
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Louisville track and field teams finished with four event wins and 31 top five finishes at the Yellow Jacket Invitational to start the outdoor season on Friday. Emmonnie Henderson, Morgan Zacharias, Christian Buckley and Calvin Chemoiywo all finished the day with wins for the Cardinals.
"Today was an outstanding opener for our squads," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We're excited about the things we saw this weekend in all event areas. We have quite a few student-athletes that didn't compete during the indoor season and they showed poise and promise today. Our goal is to build upon last month's indoor ACC finishes and get into team contention as the outdoor season progresses. Today we made strong progress toward that goal."
Buckley and Henderson gave the Cardinals a sweep in the shot put. Buckley registered his first career win. He won the shot put with a personal best throw of 17.70m/58-1.00. Henderson continued her dominance in the shot put, winning with a throw of 16.98m/55-08.50.
Zacharias also recorded her first career win in the pole vault. She won the event with a mark of 4.00m/13-01.50. Chemoiywo opened the outdoor season with a win in the 5000m with a time of 14:32.10.
Louisville also had nine runner-up finishes. Sophomore Cyerra Cassell finished second in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 53.59m/175-10. Senior Bre'Yana Wash continued her momentum in the long jump, finishing second with a jump of 6.08m/19-11.50.
Jerin Allen also carried momentum from the indoor season into the outdoor season. Allen finished second in the high jump with a mark of 2.11m/6-11.00. The Cards had runner-up finishes in the 1500m on both the
men's and women's side. Mia Ross finished second with a personal best time of 4:28.29. Edwin Kibichiy made his return to the track, finishing second with a time of 3:52.67.
Newcomer Natalie Uhl finished second in the discus with a throw of 45.27m/148-06. Freshman John Kolb made his outdoor debut with a throw of 48.88m/160-04 in the discus to finish second.
Daniel Bien-Aime finished second in the men's 100m with a time of 10.59. Gwen Shaw finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.86.
Louisville will be back in action next weekend at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
