June 12, 2026 | Track & Field
Byrd finished as the decathlon runner-up with 8,190 points, while Callahan cleared 4.64m (15-2.5) to place fourth in the women’s pole vault.
EUGENE, Ore. – University of Louisville men's track & field sophomore KJ Byrd and women's track & field redshirt senior Ashley Callahan each set ACC and program records in their respective events as the Cardinals concluded the second day of the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday.
After finishing fourth as a freshman in 2025, Byrd finished as the national runner-up in the men's decathlon with an eye-popping total of 8,190 points, rewriting both the conference and program record books while finishing an agonizing nine points away from his first career NCAA title.
The mark broke the previous ACC record of 8,084 points that was set by Duke's Curtis Beach in 2011, while also shattering the Louisville program record of 7,944 points that was recorded by Paul Kallenberg at the 2025 ACC Outdoor Championships last May. Additionally, Byrd's point total added nearly 300 points to his previous personal best
After recording three personal records on the first day of action, Byrd began the second day of competition in the decathlon with a personal-best time of 14.44 in the 110m hurdles. The sophomore then followed it up with a final clearance of 5.41m (17-9) in the pole vault to set a new NCAA Championships meet record in the decathlon pole vault, while narrowly missing out on breaking the overall NCAA record of 5.50m (18-0.5) that has stood since 1993.
Callahan also earned First Team All-American honors in record-breaking fashion, notching the highest NCAA Championships finish of her career with a fourth-place showing in the women's pole vault after clearing a final bar of 4.64m (15-2.5).
The redshirt senior bettered the previous ACC record of 4.63m (15-2.25) that was set in 2016 by Duke's Megan Clark, while also improving on the Louisville record of 4.61m (15-1.5) that was previously owned by 2022 NCAA pole vault champion Gabriela Leon.
Callahan ends her two-year Louisville career as both the indoor and outdoor record holder in the women's pole vault, while also having earned three All-American honors during her time as a Cardinal.
Iliana Triantafyllou also set a personal best in the women's pole vault, clearing 4.39m (14-4.75) to place 17th and earn Honorable Mention All-American distinction while simultaneously moving up to third in the program record books.
In the women's shot put, Kaia Tupu-South earned Second Team All-American honors in her first NCAA Championships appearance, finishing in 15th place with a mark of 16.46m (54-0) to close out her stellar collegiate career.
Eve Divinity closed out her collegiate career as well in the women's long jump, garnering Honorable Mention All-American distinction for the second time in her career after making her first national championship appearance in 2023.
With the eight points earned by both Byrd in the decathlon and Elsingi Kipruto in the men's 10000m, the Louisville men enter the final day of men's competition in fourth place with 16 points as they look to place inside the top 10 as a unit for just the second time in program history.
