Mallory Comerford breaks school record during National Championship swim
INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up day three of the NCAA Women's Championships by breaking a school record en route to a national championship swim.
Â
Mallory Comerford effectively ran down Katie Ledecky to be crowned Co-National Champion in the 200-free with a school record time of 1:40.36. Comerford shattered her old school record (1:41.70) set at the 2017 ACC's by over a second. The National Championship time of 1:40.36 was also the second fastest time ever.
Â
"What an honor to be able to do this," UofL head coach Arthur Albiero said after Comerford's National Championship swim. "To watch somebody realize something so special. How far she's come along in the two years in the program is hard to fathom. I think more than anything, she believed. She believed that she could come here and challenge the field with great respect – but she believed as program and we believed as a program. It's incredible to see that come to fruition at this setting. I think at the end of the day it's tradition now. It's six years in a row now we've had a NCAA champion – very few programs in the country can claim that. I think it speaks volumes to the environment that we've created, to the legacy that the previous champions have left, and to be able to have your name on the wall. I think it starts with the whole administration. The support that we have to create all these things for our athletes to come here and do some crazy things."
Â
National Champion Mallory Comerford extended Louisville women's streak to six-straight years with a National Champion.
Â
In the first event for the Cardinals, Grace Oglesby finished 15th, posting a time of 52.10.
Â
In the 100-breast, Senior Andrea Cottrell took home the fifth spot by boarding a time of 58.39.
Â
In the final event of the night, Louisville finished 10th in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:36.03 put up by Alina Kendzior (24.46), Andrea Cottrell (26.69), Grace Oglesby (21.87), and Casey Fanz (21.87).
