Freshman Caitlin Ferguson collects three RBIs in Sunday's 8-5 win; McNary, Soles tally three hits apiece
Freshman Caitlin Ferguson drove in three runs and junior Jamie Soles added two RBIs to lead the University of Louisville softball team to an 8-5 win over Northern Iowa in the final game of the Louisville Softball Classic. Senior Maryssa Becker struck out seven and picked up her third win of the weekend to help the Cardinals improve to 15-7 on the season.
Â
UofL struck early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Senior leftfielder Jordan McNary delivered a one-out single and proceeded to steal second and move to third on an errant throw. After a walk to Becker, junior centerfielder Nicole Pufahl's fielder's choice sent McNary home to put the Cards on the scoreboard. After designated player Alison Szydlowski's bunt single put runners on the corners, a steal attempt saw Szydlowski out at second, but allowed Pufahl to cross the plate to put Louisville on top 2-0.
Â
The Cards tacked on two more runs in the second. Senior first baseman Tiarra Sanabria reached on an error and took second in junior catcher Jenna Jordan's sacrifice bunt. An RBI single by Soles and a double by Ferguson increased the lead to 4-0.
Â
The fourth inning brought three more runs for Louisville as the Cards capitalized on three hits and an error. Jordan reached on an error and Soles followed with a single. Ferguson's second double of the game plated both runners and she crossed the plate on a hit by McNary to make the score 7-0.
Â
The Panthers (12-10) used four hits and an error to put up a four-spot in the fifth. Brittney Krodinger's two-run double plated Anna Varriano who had reached on a fielder's choice and Jaci Spencer who had singled. Brittney Roby's RBI groundout allowed Courtney Krodinger to score an unearned run and Macey Wolfe's RBI hit sent Brittney Krodinger home to cut the lead to 7-4.
Â
Louisville got a run back in the fifth when Szydlowski and Sanabria delivered back-to-back singles and Soles' third hit of the game pushed the score to 8-4.
Â
Northern Iowa tacked on one last run in the sixth after a walk to Bunch and a wild pitch placed a runner in scoring position for Spencer's RBI single for the 8-5 final.
Â
Becker (11-4) gave up five runs, three earned, on eight hits to pick up the win. Soles finished the game batting 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and McNary was 3-for-4 with a run, two stolen bases and an RBI to help pace the Cardinals at the plate.
