
Men's Swimming In Second at ACCs after Day 3

Cards reach the podium five times in tonight's session.
The University of Louisville men's swimming team had two golds, two silvers and a bronze on the third night of competition at the 2017 ACC Men's Championships at McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech. Â

UofL sits in second with one more day to go with 714.5 just behind NC State's 799.5. The Cards are followed by Virginia Tech (567), Notre Dame (562), Florida State (476), UNC (416), Virginia (413), Duke (373), Pitt (334), Georgia Tech (308), Boston College (98) and Miami (76). Â These team scores do not include platform diving from last week's competition and will be added in tomorrow.

"I am proud of our guys and the way we were picking up momentum as the meet progresses. Our seniors continue to elevate their legacy and the records we are breaking speak for themselves. Finishing the day with an exclamation point on the relay win and new ACC record sets the tone for the next session. You can always count that our our team will compete with their hearts," said Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach.

In the 400-IM, Etay Gurevich touched fourth in the A-final with a time of 3:44.76. Fellow freshman Keegan Foulke was sixth with a 3:46.86. Jarrett Jones was second in the B-final with a 3:46.62. Jake Schultz put up a 3:50.08 in the same heat. Robert Owen of Virginia Tech, who was an Olympic Trials finalist in the 200 backstroke, won his third consecutive gold in this event in a NCAA A- cut time and set a new meet record of 3:38.43 which is the 4th fastest time in Division I this season.

In the 100-fly, Joshua Quallen won silver with a tine of 45.56 Â shaving .25 off this morning's prelim time and made an NCAA A-cut and set a school record. Zach Harting was sixth in the same final, touching in 46.53 just ahead of David Boland's 45.64. Â NC State's Ryan Held set an ACC record with a 44.78 for an NCAA A-cut for gold.

Trevor Carroll almost caught Soeren Dahl down the stretch of the 200-free, but was just edged by the Dane's 1:32.74. Carroll had a time of 1:33.10 for a silver dropping 0.42 seconds from last year's time . Matthias Lindenbauer was fifth with a 1:34.24 in the A-final. Andrej Barna was eighth in the B-final with a 1:37.65.

Carlos Claverie won bronze in the 100-breast, boarding a 52.05 which was 0.36 seconds faster than he was at this meet last year, and just off his personal best time from last year's NCAA's.. Brennen Berger was 7th in the B-final with a 53.91. Virginia Tech's Brandon Fiala won gold with a tine of 51.51

Grigory Tarasevich won the Cardinals' first gold of the meet, repeating as 100-back champion with a 45.25 which was an ACC Meet record and an A-cut as well as setting a school record. In the B-final, Aaron Greene was third, clocking a 47.10.  Tarasevich  held off Virginia freshman Josephy Clark who led the first half of the race and finished second with a 45.63.

In the final event of the evening, the Louisville 400-medley relay team led wire-to-wire for gold with an ACC meet and conference record and the fourth fastest time in the country with a school record time of 3:04.44. Â The foursome of Grigory Tarasevich (45.11), Carlos Claverie (51.88), Josh Quallen (45.29), and the anchor of Trevor Carroll (42.16) was good for gold, an A-cut and a new school record.

The 2017 ACC Swimming Championships resume Thursday morning at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries in the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and the 200 butterfly. The finals for those events, in addition to the final heat of the 1650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay begin at 6 p.m.
