Cleveland, Dieye and Kubel earn All-ACC Academic Team recognition for work in classroom
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville graduate student Stefan Cleveland, junior Tim Kubel and freshman Cherif Dieye were named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team as announced Tuesday by Commissioner John Swofford.
Cleveland, a native of Dayton, Ohio, who was selected in the second round of the 2017 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire, is pursuing an MBA at UofL after earning a degree in engineering from Dartmouth. Hailing from Dakar, Senegal, Dieye is majoring in business, while Kubel is a native of Stuttgart, Germany and majoring in finance. Kubel is a three-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree.
A CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team honoree, Cleveland played every minute in goal for the Cardinals in 2016 starting all 22 matches and registering 10 shutouts overall, the most for a Louisville goalkeeper since 2011. He also ranked 14th in the nation and No. 4 in the ACC in goals against average at 0.710.
In his first collegiate season, Dieye ranked second on the team with five goals while appearing in all 22 matches and making one start. He scored first career goal in a Sept. 24 win over No. 16 Virginia and delivered the game-winning goal in Louisville's 2-1 triumph over Ohio State on Oct. 18
Kubel earned NSCAA Second Team All-America honor and was MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist after scoring three goals and matching a school record with 11 assists while starting all 22 matches at right back. He was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI First Team, All-ACC First Team and NSCAA Scholar All-America Team while ranking fifth in the nation with his 11 assists.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Louisville closed the 2016 season ranked No. 6 nationally in the final NSCAA Top 25 and finished with a 14-6-2 record after advancing to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championship for the fourth time in the last seven seasons.
