
Men's Swimming Sets Three Records on Day 1 of ACCs

Cards win two medals in relays.
The 2017 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship began with record-breaking performances at the McAuley Aquatic Center Monday evening on the campus of Georgia Tech.
"What at way to start," said Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach. "Three school records and overall great performances by all of our guys. Now we just keep building on today."
In the first event of the meet, the 200-medley relay, Cards won silver with a school record time of 1:23.34. Grigory Tarasevich backstroke leg split of 21.09 was a school record. He handed off to Carlos Claverie, who split 23.36 in the breaststroke and handed the lead to Josh Quallen, who split 19.91. The Wolfpack ran down Trevor Carroll, who split 18.98 in a wild run down the stretch. The Cards time was second fastest time in the country and it took an ACC record and the fastest time in the country by NC State to beat the Cardinals at 1:23.16 for gold.

The Cards crushed the school record by two seconds in 800 Free Relay, bettering the old mark of  6:14.96 set last year at ACCs. Matthias  Lindenbauer led off with a 1:33.58 split, Carroll went 1:32.50 and touched second. Next in was Grigory  Tarasevich, who clocked a 1:32.41 and Zach Harting brought it home in 1:33.81 for a school record time of 6:12.30  and a silver medal. NC State won with 6:09.82, the fastest time in the country to date. Louisville was also under the former meet record.

After three events in the men's competition, including the three-meter dive, Virginia Tech leads with 163 points, followed by Duke with 147, Florida State with 146, Notre Dame with 138 and NC State with 130 points. Georgia Tech (122), North Carolina (117), Louisville (113), Pitt (106), Virginia (94), Boston College (66) and Miami (28) rounding out the field.

Tuesday's action gets underway at 10 a.m. with the prelims for the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 50 free, with doors open to spectators at 9 a.m. The finals for those events, in addition to the 200 freestyle relay, will begin at 6 p.m.
