Volleyball Hosts Virginia and Virginia Tech This Weekend

ACC Play Continues
After the Cardinals locked a share of first place in the ACC with wins over Wake Forest and Duke the University of Louisville volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Cardinal Arena for matchups with Virginia and Virginia Tech.Â
The Friday match with Virginia (Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.) has been designated as a White-Out with a Rally Towel giveaway and will be televised on the ACC Network Extra. Â The Sunday match (Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.) is the Salute To Service Match and adidas American will be handed out to the first 100 students. The match will be televised.Â
In the first match of last weekend, outside hitter Amanda Green had 12 kills, seven digs and an ace to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-16, 25-15, 25-19 sweep at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.

UofL's Tess Clark added 11 kills and a block and freshman Natalie Palastro added two aces.  The Cards hit .320 as a team and recorded five blocks and  four aces. Wilma Rivera had a double-double with 33 assists and 13 digs. Maggie DeJong led the team with four blocks.
On Sunday, Melanie McHenry had 16 kills, 14 digs and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville from a two-set deficit to a 3-2 win over Duke. Â The Cards fell in the first two sets before fighting back to win the next three sets to move to 12-2 in the ACC and 18-6 overall with the 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-10 win over the Blue Devils. Â The Cardinals had four players join McHenry with double digit kills. Amanda Green had 12 kills, an ace and 20 digs. Â Maggie DeJong had 12 kills and eight blocks and Jasmine Bennett had 12 kills, no errors and four blocks. Â Senior Tess Clark had 12 kills, three in the final set and four blocks.Â

 The University of Virginia Cavaliers bring a 7-18 overall record and a 3-11 conference mark into the match Friday. The Cavaliers struggled at the start of ACC play dropping their first ten matches, but they have turned it around as of late winning three of their last four. First year head coach Aaron Smith's team took home their first ACC win two weeks ago, Oct. 26 with a score of 3-1 over Boston College. They then dropped their Sunday matchup 3-0 to Syracuse. They got back to their winning ways beating Clemson 3-0 and Georgia Tech 3-1 last weekend. Virginia is led by sophomore Jelena Novakovic with 261 kills and a 2.90 kills per set average. Sophomore Kelsey Miller leads the team on the defensive end with 321 digs.Â

 The Virginia Tech University Hokies come into the weekend with an overall record of 9-16 and a 3-11 conference record. Last weekend the Hokies dropped their first game against Georgia Tech 3-0, but ended their four game losing streak by beating Clemson 3-1. Virginia Tech is led by junior Jaila Tolbert and freshman Ester Talamazzi who carry 259 and 257 kills respectively. Sophomore Carol Raffety leads first year head coach Jill Lytle Wilson's Hokies defensively with 357 digs. Virginia Tech will travel to Notre Dame Friday, Nov. 3 before traveling to Louisville.

Rivera Named ACC Player of the Week
Louisville's Wilma Rivera and NC State's Kaitlyn Kearney have been selected as the ACC Volleyball Co-Players of the Week. Rivera played a critical role for the Cardinals in wins over Wake Forest and Duke. The junior setter from Carolina, Puerto Rico, racked up 85 total assists for the two matches, along with eight kills on a .471 hitting percentage and 40 digs.Â
Triple Double-Digit Digs
Against Duke, UofL had three players with 20+ digs each. Â That is the only time that has happened in the rally score era. Wilma Rivera had 27, Amanda Green had 20 and libero Molly Sauer had 21 to complete the trifecta.Â
