LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Â The sixth-ranked and third-seeded Louisville men's soccer team opens the 2017 ACC Championship with a quarterfinal match against 16th-ranked and sixth-seeded Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The match will be televised on ACC Network Extra, while live stats can be accessed at GoCards.com.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Louisville closed the regular season 11-2-3 overall and 5-2-1 in the ACC following last Friday's 2-1 win at Clemson. The Cardinals are ranked sixth in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25 and Soccer America Top 25 while moving up to No. 4 in the RPI. Senior Mohamed Thiaw leads the Cardinals with eight goals this season, while junior Tate Schmitt has seven goals overall. Junior Adam Wilson has a team-leading six assists, while senior Tim Kubel has five assists on the season to go with six goals.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS
Virginia enters the match at 11-3-3 following a 4-0 win over Boston College in an ACC first round match. The Cavaliers, ranked as highly as No. 16 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll, finished the regular season with a 3-2-3 ACC record. Last season, UVA was 11-4-5 overall and 3-2-3 in the ACC before ending its campaign with a 1-0 loss at Stanford in the third round of the 2016 NCAA Championship.Â

Sunday's match will offer a unique experience for Louisville redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch, who is expected to make his 10th start of the season while competing against a Virginia squad coached by his father. George Gelnovatch is in his 22nd season as the head coach of the Cavaliers and while the two programs played twice last season, Sunday's game would mark the first time Jake has been on the field and competed against his father's team. No stranger to the UVA program, Jake was born (March 1997) more than a year after his father was named head coach of the Cavaliers (January 1996).

Entering its fourth ACC Championship, Louisville has accumulated a 4-3-0 record in its first three appearances in the annual tournament. The Cardinals were 1-1-0 last season earning a 1-0 quarterfinal win against Virginia before falling 2-1 in overtime at Wake Forest in the semifinal round. In 2015, Louisville was 1-1-0 registering a first round win (2-1) at Duke and dropping a quarterfinal match at Wake Forest (2-1 OT). In 2014, Louisville earned a quarterfinal win at North Carolina (1-0) and a semifinal victory over Syracuse (2-1) before falling 2-1 in double overtime to Clemson in the title match. Overall, the Cardinals are 8-9-4 in conference tournament matches under the direction of head coach Ken Lolla, including winning the 2010 Big East Championship.Â

The Cardinals opened 2017 ranked as high as No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll.

Tim Kubel was named Oct. 12 among 10 finalists for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate men's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately at www.seniorCLASSaward.com to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through November 20. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2017 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships later this fall.
A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Kubel has started 74 matches in his four years at Louisville, including 11 this season for the No. 5 Cardinals. Kubel has accumulated 20 career goals and 23 assists overall, including five goals and four assists in 2017. In the classroom, Kubel has a 3.688 cumulative GPA while majoring in finance with a minor in marketing.
During his junior season in 2016, Kubel was an NSCAA Second Team All-America selection and was a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist after scoring three goals and matching a school record with 11 assists while starting all 22 matches at right back. He was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI First Team, All-ACC First Team, ACC Championship All-Tournament Team and NSCAA All-South Region First Team. In 2015, he earned All-ACC First Team honors, while in 2014, Kubel was named ACC Freshman of the Year, All-ACC Second Team and NSCAA All-South Region First Team.
