Mariana Humberg wins singles title and teams with Abbie Pahz for doubles crown.
Mariana Humberg won the A-singles flight and then paired with Abbie Pahz to win the A-doubles flight at the Wake Forest Invitational.
Â
"Very proud of all the girls, we came down with a goal to win everything we played in it and we almost accomplished it, said Coach Kevin Fulton. Â "We made the finals in both doubles and two singles flights and that made for a great weekend. I can't say enough about our senior leadership on this team, and the development of every single girl individually."
Â
Â
In A-flight singles, Mariana Humberg beat Emily Dunbar of Richmond 6-2, 6-1 and outlasted Alisa Solovyeva of Winthrop 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. She advanced to the finals to meet Elizabeth Norman of James Madison and won 6-4, 6-1.
Â
Â
In B-flight singles, sophomore Raven Neely bean Winthrop's Megan Kauffman 6-4, 6-4 and then beat Carolina Costamagna of Kansas State 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-0 but could not play in the championship match against Maria Linares of Kansas State due to injury.
 Â
Â
"Raven Neely continues to develop and grow and will become a factor," said Fulton.
Â
Â
In A-flight doubles, Mariana Humberg and Abbie Pahz combined forces to blank Heidi Swope and Maria Zacarias of Appalachian State in the opening round 8-0 before beating Vitoria Okuyama and Natalia Peery of William and Mary 8-3. In the semi-finals, the Louisville pair bested Wake Forest's Chandler Carter and Mary Caroline Meredith 8-3. Pahz and Humberg took on Anna Catharine Feaster and Samantha Armas of Davidson, winning 8-3 in the finals.
Â
Â
"I was especially impressed with our senior doubles duo of Mari Humberg, and Abbie Pahz as they put on a show today in the finals of a doubles. Mari let that momentum carry over and played almost a flawless second set in the A championship finals," said Fulton.
Â
Â
In the B-flight doubles, Raven Neely and Ariana Rodriguez won their first match over Charlotte 8-6. They then handled Maria Medina and Grace Hashiguchi of Liberty 8-1. The pair picked up a win over Wake Forest's Anna Ulyashchenko and Joanna Zalewski 8-2. Pahz and Neely fell 8-1 to Kansas State's Anna Turco and Rosanna Maffei in the finals.
Â
Â
"Ari Rodrigez played exceptionally well in doubles on Saturday and they just weren't quite able to overcome a solid Kansas State team today in the B doubles finals," said Fulton.
