Volleyball Takes Down Virginia 3-1

Cards are 11-5 and 5-1 in the ACC
Maggie DeJong had 10 kills, hit .562 with five blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17 win over Virginia in ACC volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville.

UofL moves to 11-5 and 5-1 in the ACC. The Cards hit .270 with 10 blocks and four aces. UVA drops to 4-13 and 0-6 in the league. The Cavaliers hit .192 and hindered their efforts with 13 service errors. UofL had offensive help from Melanie McHenry's 12 kills and Amanda Green's 11. Wilma Rivera had 45 assists and 16 assists. UVA was led by Harley Sebastian's 15 kills.

In the first set, UofL popped out to a 6-1 lead early but the Cavaliers got within one at 17-16. The Cards called timeout and ran off two points on a block by Jasmine Bennett and a kill by Amanda Green. Virginia scored three straight to tie at 20 but the Cards scored four of the last points of the set for the 25-21 win. UofL hit .206 with an ace and had four kills from Maggie DeJong.

In the second set, UVA blew out to a 6-1 lead early and it took a 6-0 run by the Cards to tie at 13. The teams traded points and ended up tied at 20 on a kill by Jasmine Bennett. UofL got help from the Cavs when they had a service error and a hitting error before the Cards closed the deal with a 25-22 win to take a 2-0 set score into the break. UofL had three blocks and were led by Amanda Green and Jasmine Bennett, who had three kills apiece.

UVA hit .317 in the third set and used a 5-0 run to go up 13-10 early. UofL got within one at 20-19 on a kill by Megan Sloan, who produced a spark off the bench. The team traded points and before Jasmine Bennet had an ace to put the scored at 23-21. But the Hoos capitalized on a Cardinal service error followed by a hitting error to take the set 25-22.

 In the fourth set, UofL used a 7-2 run to go up 15-9 and used .455 hitting to stay in the lead en route to the 25-17 win.
