Megan Sloan leads with eight kills.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore outside hitter Megan Sloan's season-high eight kills helped power the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Clemson University Friday evening at Cardinal Arena. With their fifth-consecutive home win, the Cardinals (12-5, 6-1 ACC) notched their seventh shutout of the season.
Â
"Megan Sloan has had a great year of practice so far," said coach Dani Busboom Kelly. "So, it was really great to get her an opportunity to play a whole match. She did a great job and was our most effective hitter. We see her do it every day in practice, so we are so happy the fans got to see her play tonight."
Â
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Amanda Green led all players with nine kills, while sophomore outside hitter Melanie McHenry and senior middle blocker Maggie DeJong each racked up six kills for the day. As a team, the Cards hit a solid .310, while containing the Tigers to just a .013 mark. Clemson drops to 5-14 and 0-7 in the ACC. They were led by Tori Woogk's seven kills.Â
Â
The Cards pulled ahead quickly in the first set, using a pair of McHenry kills to take an early 4-1 lead. After the Tigers narrowed the margin to two, three straight Cardinal points reestablished their advantage and forced a turnover. Later in the set, Louisville sealed control of the set as Sloan's kill ended a terrific rally and pressed the lead to 17-9. The Cards eventually clinched the set at 25-14 with a 6-1 run, capped off by a service ace from Rivera.
Â
For the set, Louisville hit a robust .393, while blanking Clemson with a .000 hitting percentage. Green posted five kills, while Sloan followed close behind with four.
Â
Louisville opened the second set with another early lead, but Clemson clawed back and cut the lead to one. The Cards quickly responded with a 7-1 run that maintained the lead for the remainder of the set. Consecutive kills from Green and Bennett concluded a 5-1 sequence that clinched the set at 25-16.
Â
In the third set, Clemson took a short-lived 4-2 lead as Louisville responded with a 10-2 flurry that forced an opponent timeout. The Tigers remained competitive, thanks to a trio of Cards errors, but Louisville stayed in control by repeatedly keeping the ball in play. Louisville eventually closed out the match with a 3-0 run, knotting a 25-13 set victory.
Â
"We are still battling unforced errors and a few calls didn't go our way," said Coach Busboom Kelly. "So, in a game that is close, two errors can make a huge difference."
Â
The Cards will remain home this weekend for a match against Georgia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. The game will be available on ACC Network Extra.
Â
"Georgia Tech is really good," said Coach Busboom Kelly. "I know our players know that and our fans will get to see a battle. They are smooth and well-coached and play the game very well. They are a team that expects to be in the top echelon of the ACC, so that will definitely be a challenge."
