Own goal the difference as Cardinals extend unbeaten streak to six matches
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 7 Louisville men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six matches while registering its fourth shutout in that span with Friday's 1-0 road victory against Virginia Tech at Thompson Field.
Winning for the fifth time in the last six matches, the Cardinals moved to 8-1-2 overall and 4-1-0 in the ACC with Friday's triumph. Louisville also moved to 4-0-0 in road matches, while the Hokies dropped to 7-5-0 on the season and 2-3-0 in ACC matches.
As the Cardinals were registering their sixth shutout of the season, the only goal of the match came on a mistake by the Hokies with an own goal late in the second half. Louisville senior Tim Kubel sent a cross into the box where Virginia Tech's Colin Verfurth misplayed a header redirecting the ball inside the far left post for the decisive goal.
"I'm proud of the guys as it was not our best game and yet we found a way to grind out the win," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla following Friday's result.
Making his third straight start, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Will Meyer had a pair of saves to clinch his second consecutive shutout for the Cardinals. Outshooting an opponent for the 10th time in 11 matches this season, the Cardinals finished with a 17-8 edge in shots against the Hokies, including a 7-2 edge on goal. Corner kicks were even at 4-4.
Up next, No. 7 Louisville will return home to host Florida Atlantic on Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
