Cards welcome Ball State, Michigan State, WVU to the Bass Rudd Tennis Center
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a solid showing at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals, the University of Louisville women's tennis team returns home this weekend to open home competition with the Louisville Tennis Classic at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The action will take place on Friday, Nov. 4 through Sunday, Nov. 6.
Â
The hosting Cardinals will be joined by squads from Ball State, West Virginia and Michigan State. The teams will compete in a hidden-dual format, commencing with an opening doubles round on Friday at 10 a.m. The first two days of competition will begin with a doubles doubleheader, followed by singles matchups between No. 7 and No. 8 players, before concluding with a traditional team singles round.
Â
In their last outing, Coach Mark Beckham's team posted strong results at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship at Middle Tennessee State University. Freshman Mia Schmidt-Jorgensen continued a strong rookie campaign as she reached the final of the B-flight singles bracket, falling in three sets to Andrea Pascual Larranaga of Evansville. In the main singles draw, senior Mariana Humberg advanced to the round of 16, while teaming with fellow senior Abbie Pahz to make the doubles quarterfinals.
Â
Defending Mid-American Conference champions Ball State is also making its return to the courts after the regional tournament. Three Cardinals notched victories in the main singles draw, as well as one in the doubles field. Coach Max Norris' team returns six players from last season and looks to be one of the MAC's top contenders in 2018.
Â
Michigan State is led by second-year head coach Kim Bruno, who debuted last season with a 17-8 campaign, placing the Spartans fifth in the Big Ten. MSU returns six members of last year's roster, including junior Emily Metcalf, who posted a 13-4 record at No. 3 singles.
Â
West Virginia is looking to rebound from a tough 2017 campaign as seven players come back for head coach Miha Lisac. In the fall season, freshman Giovanna Caputo has been a welcome addition for the Mountaineers, tallying a 6-1 tournament mark.
