Holly Hankenson leads the team with a win in the pentathlon
BLOOMINGTON, IND. – The University of Louisville track and field team finished with one win and 12 top five finishes on the final day of the IU Relays. Overall, the Cardinals finished with three wins and 17 top five finishes. Holly Hankenson won the women's pentathlon to lead the women on the final day.
"We showed strong progress in a number of areas this weekend as we continue preparation for the ACC Championships that are a little over a month away," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Alexis Gibbons, Holly Hankenson, Emmonnie Henderson, Raven Grant and Dolly Nyemah stood out for the women's squad but we had a lot of other individuals take a good step forward."
On the women's side, Hankenson won three of the five events in the pentathlon competition. She won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.69, the shot put with a throw of 11.60m/38-00.75 and the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:13.38. She finished second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. She won the event with 3,980 points.
Dolly Nyemah and Emmonnie Henderson finished second and third in the women's weight throw. Nyemah finished second with a season best throw of 21.69m/71-02.00. Her throw currently ranks fourth in the nation. Henderson finished third with a career best throw of 19.47m/63-10.50.
Sophomore Raven Grant ran her first 400-meter dash of the season and finished second. She finished with a time of 55.29.
"Teague Peck and Jerin Allen led the way for the men's squad," said Cowper. "It was Teague's first time racing the 800 meter distance this season and he was able to shave over a second off of his personal best."
On the men's side, Teague Peck made his season debut in the 800-meter run. He finished second with an indoor career best time of 1:51.58. Jerin Allen finished second in the high jump with a mark of 2.14m/7-00.25. Allen has finished in the top four of the high jump in every competition this season.
The Cardinals will be back in action next weekend at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
