Dolly Nyemah Leads Track and Field on the First Day of the ACC Indoor Championships

Louisville women stand in first after scoring three events on Thursday
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Redshirt Senior Dolly Nyemah led the University of Louisville track and field team after the first day of competition at the ACC Indoor Championships on Thursday. The Louisville women are in first place with 26 points after scoring three events.
Nyemah capped off the day repeating as ACC Indoor Weight Throw champion while teammate Emmonnie Henderson finished as runner-up. Nyemah set a new ACC record with a throw of 22.01m/72-2.50 to win the event for a second straight year. Henderson finished second with a new personal best throw of 19.59m/64-03.25. Both were able to score points for the Cardinals to propel them to first in the standings after the first day.
"Dolly Nyemah and Emmonnie Henderson capped the night off with a one-two sweep in the women's weight throw," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Dolly was terrific tonight! She has handled the pressure of being the ACC favorite very well and was able to shatter the championship meet record by over a foot. Emmonnie has really worked hard to pick up as many points for us as she can in the weight throw and the eight points she picked up tonight will make a big difference in the final team standings on Saturday."
Holly Hankenson earned first team All-ACC honors with a second place finish in the pentathlon. Hankenson shattered her previous school record of 4,009 points with 4,151 points today. Going into the final event, Hankenson was in third place. She won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:13.56 to move into second in the final standings. On the day, she finished second in the 60 meter hurdles, sixth in the high jump, third in the shot put and second in the long jump.
"Holly Hankenson got things started this morning with a tremendous pentathlon," said Cowper. "Her total score is not only a new school record but should advance to the NCAA Championships!"
Eric Fox finished the day in fifth place of the heptathlon with a total of 2,896 points. He started the day with an eighth place finish in the 60 meter dash. He finished seventh in the long jump and the shot put. He wrapped up the day by winning the high jump with a mark of 1.99m/6-06.25.
"Eric Fox had an outstanding first day in the men's heptathlon and is on pace to outperform his personal best with a strong day tomorrow," said Cowper.
Other highlights on the day were performances from Spencer Harris and Mitchell Kessler in the men's weight throw. Harris finished 11th with a personal best throw of 16.91m/55-5.75. Kessler finished 14th with a personal best throw of 16.67m/54-8.25
"Mitchell Kessler and Spencer Harris both came out and achieved new personal bests in the men's s weight throw," Cowper said. "Both of these guys have grown tremendously throughout the season and will be able to play a big role for us in the future."
The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with running events beginning at 11:00 a.m.
