Senior led Cards to win over No. 12 Missouri
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville senior Andrea Cottrell and Pitt freshman Eben Vorster and were tabbed for Atlantic Coast Conference Swimmer of the Week honors. Pittsburgh senior Dominic Giordano and Clemson freshman Freida Lim have been named the Divers of the Week.Â
Cottrell, a two-time ACC women's Swimmer of the Week recipient this season, recorded five first-place finishes in the Cardinals' win over No. 12 Missouri. In the women's 200-breast, the senior put up an NCAA B-cut time of 2:11.84, almost three seconds ahead of the runner-up's time. The Ohio native won by the slimmest of margins, by one one-hundredth to be exact, boarding a 1:00.87 for first-place in the 100 breast. She also swam the second leg of both the 200 and 400 medley relays, each of which placed first.
Vorster's collegiate career began with a perfect weekend as the Pitt freshman mid-year addition won all four events in which he competed in as the Panthers dominated West Virginia on Saturday, winning 214-86. The South African native cruised to victory individually in the 100 fly (50.22), 200 fly (1:49.78) and 200 IM (1:51.94) while also anchoring Pitt's winning 400 free relay team to a win in 3:03.36.
Â
Giordano, who has been named men's Diver of the Week for the fourth time this season, opened 2017 in amazing fashion, breaking a nine-year old school record in the 1-meter as he won both of his events in the Panthers' triumph in the Backyard Brawl against local rival West Virginia. The senior's career-best six-dive score on one-meter of 434.63 etched his name in the Pitt and Trees Pool record books, while his total of 333.08 on three-meter also earned the Panthers maximum team points as they swept aside the Mountaineers in the team competition, 214-86.
Â
Lim started off 2017 as the only Tiger diver to finish in the top five during competition over this past weekend, continuing her established success on the platform during her freshman campaign. She posted an NCAA zone qualifying score of 252.80 in that event and finished amongst the top 25 in the three-meter dive.
