Women’s Soccer Defeats No. 17 Boston College 3-2 in Come From Behind Win

Cardinals use a second half performance to take down the Eagles and remain undefeated in ACC play
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 25 minutes to erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat Boston College 3-2 in double overtime. Junior Kaela Dickerman scored the game-winning goal 19 seconds into the second overtime period.
The Eagles scored first off a set piece in the 26th minute. Olivia Vaughn found the back of the net with a header off a corner kick. Twelve minutes later Vaughn struck again and scored from outside the box to give Boston College a 2-0 lead.
Boston College finished the first half with a 6-3 shot advantage while the Cardinals finished with a 4-3 corner kick advantage. Taylor Bucklin finished with one save while Boston College's Alexis Bryant finished with two.
The Cardinals played better in the second half than the first. They created more offensive opportunities and controlled possession for most of the half. Their persistence paid off when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Sophomore Jill Vetere stepped up the ball and blasted a shot just past the reach of the keeper to cut the lead to 2-1.
With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Cardinals changed formations and pressed offensively, looking to score the equalizer. The Cardinals had several opportunities but couldn't connect. Then in the 89th minute, Niamh Nelson served a ball inside the box to Inger Katrine Bjerke who headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Boston College had an opportunity in the final minute but he Cardinal defense held tough, forcing the overtime period.
Dickerman had a breakaway in the 94th minute but she hit the post. Tina Marolt had a shot in the 98th minute that went wide. The Eagles had an opportunity in the 99th minute off a corner kick but Bucklin made the save, forcing the second overtime period.
At the start of the second overtime period, freshman Callie McKinney served the ball right to Dickerman's foot. Dickerman sent a rocket from just outside 18 yards through the upper right corner and out of reach of the keeper for the game-winner.
Boston College finished the match with a 14-13 edge in shots and a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Bucklin finished with three saves while Bryant finished with five.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 as the host Notre Dame in Lynn Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
