Kelsi Worrell Moves into Olympic Semifinals in 100-fly

In the first day of Olympic competition, the University of Louisville swim team competed in four races and put one in the semifinals. Â

Kelsi Worrell won her heat of the 100-fly to win a fourth seed for tonight's semi-finals with a 56.97.  World record holder Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden took the top seed with a 56.26 with fellow American Dana Vollmer taking the second seed with a 56.56. Canada's Penny Oleksiak posted a World Junior Record with a time of 56.73.

Tanja Kylliainen of Finland put up her lifetime best time of 4:45.33 in the 400-IM, finishing second in her heat.  Hungarian Katinka Hosszu was 3.25 seconds ahead of the World Record swim going into the freestyle leg of the women's 400 IM in prelims but missed the World Record with the 2nd-fastest time in the history of the event 4:28.58, going into the finals tonight.

Marcelo Acosta of El Salvador shattered his personal best time in the 400-free, winning his heat in 3:48.82, shaving three seconds off his qualifying time.   USA's Conor Dwyer had the fastest time of the heats with a 3:43.42 Mack Horton was in 3:43.84.

Carlos Claverie of Venezuela put up a 1:01.13 in the 100-breaststroke, finishing second in his heat. Great Britain's Adam Peaty set a new world record time of 57.55 for the top seed in the semifinals.
