Volleyball Sweeps VCU
August 26, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Melanie McHenry had 11 kills and Jasmine Bennett added 10 as the University of Louisville swept VirgInia Commonwealth 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 in the Hampton Inn Classic Friday evening on the campus of Bowling Green State.
Â
UofL hit .173 with four aces and five blocks. Molly Sauer led defensively with 15 digs. Janelle Jenkins had four blocks and added an ace and nine digs. Â VCU hit .091 with 5.5 blocks and 66 digs. The Rams were led by CeCe Madison's 10 kills. Jasmin Sneed added four blocks.
Â
"I thought our middles did a really good job offensively and defensively," said Anne Kordes, UofL head coach. "They did a good job of keeping VCU from running the middle and forcing them out to the pins. Our libero did a great job tonight, quietly handling serve receive and defense. I really liked how we came back in the second game and it set the tone to win the match."
Â
In  the first set, Louisville used a 6-2 run late to win 25-22 in a set that had 20 ties but just three lead changes. Melanie McHenry had five kills and Jasmine Bennett chipped in four to pace the Cardinal offense. VCU hit just .077 in the set and were aced twice.Â
Â
Down 21-14, the Cardinals rallied behind the aggressive serving of Melanie McHenry. The Rams had five straight errors during the Cards' late run.  Ashley Pettibone came off the bench and served for three straight points to tie at 25. A VCU serving error followed by a hitting error gave the Cards the 25-23 win. UofL hit just .124 in the set but it was enough as VCU was swinging at a chilly .051 pace.
Â
In the third set, errors plagued both sides. Tied at nine, UofL went up 13-9 but then let the Rams back in the set when VCU took the lead at 23-22 on a miss by Jasmine Bennett. But the Rams would not score again as Louisville ran the table for the 25-23 win.
